Shadow copy will not restore RRS feed

  • Question

  • I accidently deleted a file in one of my shares, but when I go to the previous version tab and try and copy the file back I get a message that says "The destination you have specified does not exist, it might be an offline network location or an empty CD or DVD drive" When I try and open the file from the copy I get a different message that says "The previous version of 'downstairs.psd' from Today, October 15, 2009, 8 hours ago no longer exists. Select a different version and try again." My home server only has one previous version so I don't have any other previous versions to use.

I have tried copying to my desktop, to another folder on the home server. Some files restore and others do not. Is there anything I can do to get the files back? I only have one previous version and I am worried that the next time VSS runs it will see that the file has been deleted and remove it from the previous version.

Also is there a way to force WHS to keep more than one backup? I have 2 TB of free space and I would like more preious versions incase this happens again.

  • Shadow Copies are broken on Windows Home Server. To make a long story short, see this FAQ. It's possible that you will be able to access previous versions of your files anyway, by following the steps in this forum post. And for more information about actually using shadow copies (including how to access a shadow copy of a deleted file), you can consult the help topics that are made available when you try to access them.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
