Dislike or Unhelpful Vote RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Is there any plan for adding "Dislike" or "Unhelpful Vote" to the threads?

There are times you can see someone is answering to a thread and some other people answering to the same question, not in the same time, after a while with small changes and post it. I do NOT think this professional way to answer questions.

Best Wishes, Arbi; Please vote if you find this posting was helpful or Mark it as answered.

  • I had thought of that idea too. But I see two main problems with a "dislike" or "unhelpful vote" button:

    • I think such buttons would be a magnet for abuse.
    • they are somewhat negative in nature, and this should be a positive place.

Would these buttons be used to flag poor behaviour on the forums, or would they be used to indicate which suggestions were not helpful for the purposes of the original poster getting the information he wanted:

If used to flag unproductive behaviour, these would be seen as anonymous personal attacks. If someone's behaviour is an issue, it would be better to address it with an explanation than to just flag it. that would give the individual a chance to rationally consider he may indeed be in the wrong.

If used to flag comments that are not seen as helpful for the original poster, well, some of those comments *might* be helpful to others with similar questions. I have seen lots of cases where someone misread the question and gave a perfectly valid answer to a question that was not asked. It would be a shame to brand those posters with the stigma of being unhelpful.

Would receiving these things have a negative impact on recognition points or achievements?

  • But here's another thought. In addition to "propose as answer", what if there was a set of "rating" buttons where participants could give 1, 2, or 3 stars? The lowest rating (one star) would still be a positive thing.

Might be better, though, to do it somewhat like the "vote as helpful" button, where it would show the number of different users that gave the post 1 star, the number that gave it 2 stars, and the number that gave it three. Kind of like how hotels, movies, consumer products, and restaurants are rated on the web.
