  • You don't need his disk for a Repair install...

Download the SP1 Refresh for your language and edition from the links on these pages...

    Heidoc -Microsoft DR Download links

The links are for downloads from the Digital River servers run for MS, so are about as safe as you can get :)

Once you have it -downloaded, you then need to burn the DVD from it - use either the Windows Disk Image Burner, or (better still) your favourite burning application at the slowest speed possible.

Note that you do NOT 'drag and drop' the file to the disk, you must use the 'burn an image' option from your app - or you'll end up with a useless coaster :)

Once you have the disk burnt, check that it boots the (or any other) system OK - but do NOT start the repair from there - you must start the repair from within a normal Windows boot.

Follow the instructions in this tutorial - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html - and they should
help you get through it (it's not as difficult as it looks!)

Always ask questions first if you're unsure - either here, or in sevenforums.

    Good luck with it!

  • Tampered File: %systemroot%\system32\slui.exe|slui.exe.mui|COM Registration

To confirm that the problem is what I think it is, please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt window and post the results.

    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA} /S

    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA} /S

    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA} /S

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • Hmm - that all looks normal to me. This means we'll have to fall back on normal troubleshooting methods.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • I actually ran a full checkdisk and sfc /scannow yesterday before generating the MGADiag report in my initial post. Unfortunately I don't have access to skydrive on this account, but there's the CBS.log file in my dropbox.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/5urfg4q4q4jyyxm/CBS.log

  • DropBox is fine :)

The SFC results seem to have rolled off the CBS.log and into one of the .persist.cab files.

The log itself is pretty clear of errors, but there is a minor anomaly, which may be pointed up by running a CheckSUR scan.

Please download and save  the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file  - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive/Dropbox Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

  • I'm about 90% sure I ran that one yesterday before generating the MGADiag report too (based on the file size and extension), but can't say for sure so I've run it again. I was trying really hard to solve it without having to pester anyone here about it, but didn't have any luck. Anyway, here's the log files.

  • I've uploaded a file - mkmaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at  Noel's SkyDrive

    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…

Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder  mkmaa in the same place.

Open this folder - there should be one folder inside it (Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

  • Great - CheckSUR is now error-free.

Please run another SFC /SCANNOW, and post the new CBS.log file, and we'll see if anything new shows up there.

  • I've run sfc /scannow again. Here's the new CBS.log file

  • There's no significant data in that log - either the SFC failed in a rather strange way, or it's been rolled off into the .persist.cab files.

Please upload the cab files, and I'll take a look and see what I can find.

The first line there is a strange one, and I suspect that it's caused by registry corruption.

  • LOL! - started a new job last week, and I'm still trying to fit the rest of my life around it.

Create a new System Restore point

Download the file CANDEP.reg from my SkyDrive and  save it to your desktop -

    Noel's SkyDrive

    Open an Elevated Command Prompt.

At the prompt, run the following command

    REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS

Now double-click on the CANDEP.reg file, and accept the warnings - you should get  a 'Success' message.

Now run the following command in the Command Prompt window

    REG UNLOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS

    Close the window and reboot

Now try running CheckSUR again. - post the CheckSUR.log file

Then try running SFC /SCANNOW again, and post the new CBS.log file.

Got an "ERROR: Access is denied." message when running this command in the elevated command prompt. Before that everything went as expected

The CheckSUR went as before. Here is its log and persist.log files

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/nn9t2cbwdqa08hb/newerCheckSUR.zip

The SFC /SCANNOW went as before as well, completing without errors in less than 30 seconds. (Is it supposed to be that fast?) Here's the CBS.log and its persists.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/4dq5jrf4mm2emsy/newerCBS.zip

    EDIT:

Our pesky "Tampered File: %systemroot%\system32\slui.exe|slui.exe.mui|COM Registration" line is still showing up in the MGADiag report.

(don't worry about the UNLOAD error - it simply means that Windows was doing some maintenance on the file at the time, and it will unload automatically later)

This error actually makes sense in the context of your WGA error, as it refers to the file I was expecting to be damaged.

No  - an SFC scan will normally take 10 minutes or so, and yours appears only to have cover 3 of the 12000 or more sections normally checked.

Apart from that the CBS log is effectively error-free.

  • Yep :)

Now I need to work out what to do about them, because it may indicate much more widespread problems than we can deal with in the forums.

If I'm right, then a repair install is likely to be your only/best option.

Please reboot, wait 5 minutes (for the COMPONENTS registry hive to unload) then copy the C:\Window\System32\config\COMPONENTS file to your desktop. Then zip it, and upload it to Dropbox, and post a link.

  • It's certainly not as bad as I'd feared - but I don't honestly have either the tools or the knowledge to assess the extent of the trouble.

    You basically have three choices.

    1) Keep plugging along here, and hope I can get the system working reasonably well (I can almost certainly get it to show as being genuine - but anything else is likely to be an unexpected bonus)

    2) See if a repair install works for you

    3) See if MS WGA Support can assist and fix the whole problem without a repair install (which I would expect them to recommend anyhow)

Let me know which appeals most :)

  • I'll have to talk to the actual owner of the computer and see what he'd prefer to do. The only problem other than this is a couple Windows Updates that won't install. A repair of the install should be okay, as long as he still has his OS disks. I'll see what he says tomorrow. Thanks again for your help.
    Wednesday, April 17, 2013 9:43 PM

After re-enabling various Windows components and running Windows Update (was able to install them all now!), everything is looking good. Re-activation went off without any trouble and our troublesome line from the WGADiag is gone. Here's the output from it, but unless you see something wrong I'm gonna call this one fixed.
