Having difficulty working with Web Config files

  The web site runs fine in development.  When uploaded the first thing that
  pops up is a  "Server Error in '/' Application." and <!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
  
  <configuration>
      <system.web>
          <customErrors mode="Off"/>
      </system.web>
  </configuration>
  
  I've spent a lot of time trying to understand it and hope that someone could direct me to an "idiots tutorial".  Thanks
