Question

Hello, recently my motherboard died an ugly death and was replaced by a friend. At the same time he wiped the hard drive since all the improper shut downs perpetrated some evil upon it. Whilst trying to activate Windows Vista again, we happened upon this most heinous error message
Code:
0xC004c003
Description:
The activation server determined the specified product key is in use.
How does one go about activating without purchasing a new product key? Thanks for any help with this issue!

Hi msnomer,
I see the problem.
When installing Vista or Windows 7, you do not need to enter a Product Key during install. Windows will use it's own "Keyless Install/Trial" key. This "Keyless Install/Trial" key can not be activated and acts as a Trial key. It allows the user to use Windows for 30 days. To continue using Windows, after the 30 days, the user would need to enter a Valid Product key.
The reason I tell you this is because your Vista is currently using the Keyless Install/Trial key for Vista Home Premium
X9HTF-MKJQQ-XK376-TJ7T4-76PKF
To solve your issue, please change the product key to the Valid Product Key that came with your copy of Vista Home Premium.
Thank you,
Darin MS

I have quadruple checked the product key when I type it in as well so I know it isn't a typo-induced error. Prior to the motherboard frying, I had been using the software for over a year with no troubles.
My husband would also like me to mention that when we replaced our motherboard, we got a different model, etc and he thinks this is all BIOS-related.
--If your Windows came Pre-installed in your computer, (we refer to that as an OEM version of Windows). The OEM Product Key (found on the sticker on the side or bottom of the computer) will not be accepted in a Retail version of Windows, which is what you currently have installed. The resolution is to use the OEM recovery software that came with the PC (NOTE: Manufacturers must provide some way to reinstall Windows, nowaday they don't usually include a seperate disk, but instead will usually include the recovery software on a hidden partition on the computer's hard drive) Please refer to the documentation that came with the computer, for details or if you no longer have the recovery software, contact the manufacturer of the computer and request a replacment copy.
FYI: Once you get the OEM Recovery software for you computer, and install Windows, you will need to Activate by phone.
--If you bought the Windows seperate from the PC, please be sure that you have the proper edition (Home Premium, Basic, Ultimate...so on) of windows installed. Meaning, if you originally bought Home Premium, be sure you have Home Premium installed (I know that sounds simple, but Retail Vista install disks include all the Vista editions avaliable and if you, by mistake, installed the wrong one, the Product key would not be accepted in the incorrect edition.
Hope that helps,

You can reactivate your Windows Vista installation by performing the following:
1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in: slui.exe 4
2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
3. Select your Country.
4. Follow the instructions for phone activation (no charge).

Thanks, Carey. I have tried that before but couldn't remember the results so I just tried again just now for posting purposes.
"I was not able to validate your installation ID" and then I was going to be transferred to speak to a representative. Last time I was transferred I was told to speak to the manufacturer (emachines). The manufacturer told me to talk to Microsoft.

Hi Mark,
I have tried changing the product key and get the following message
The product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows Vista product key.
Please check your product key and try again

Hi Dabur972 - thanks for the link. I've tried everything there in the past to no avail and when I tried the phone validation and waited for a real person (since the automated version didn't work) I was told that I had to contact the manufacturer to get a new product key. And so I called emachines and was told I had to call Microsoft. And then I smacked my head against the keyboard.
I will try calling again. Is there anything specific I should mention so that they will not treat me like a hot potato?
Thanks again!Tuesday, December 15, 2009 5:27 PM -
