Does WHS recognize USB drives as being slower and only use them for duplication? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Does WHS recognize USB drives as being slower and only use them for duplication or backups instead of actual file serving? If WHS does recognize the slower BUS then I would consider leaving them external but if not I am considering moving them internal to gain efficiency.

    My current configuration:

       Dual Xeon 2.2ghz

       1gb Ram

        1 x DVD Rom (ATA)

        2 x 500gb (ATA)

        2 x 250gb (ATA)

        2 x 300gb (ATA)

        1 x 160gb (ATA)

        2 x 500gb (USB)

        Reads as 2.97TB in WHS

  • I am still waiting for someone else to confirm this, however through some independent testing I have been able to find out the following:

Today I told WHS to remove one of the USB drives. The wizard walked me through the steps and advised me that several files on the drive were open by users on my network and that they should be closed before the drive was removed. Based upon this information I assume that WHS does not take drive speed into account when determining which hard drives to use for duplication.

If anyone has any additional information about this please feel free to post it here.

    Thanks
