500 error on first visit RRS feed

Answers

  • The resolution for me is to delete my cookies for microsoft.com.  Deleting this cookie file resolved the problem on both machines that I was experiencing the issue with.  This problem can now be closed.  If anyone else experiences this issue, delete your Microsoft.com cookie file.

  • Some more information...

The first request goes to the forum, then my browser gets redirected to login.live.com, and then back to /Forums/AjaxForumPage.aspx.  It is that page that redirects me to /Error/Error500.aspx.

For my user experience, I did not see any of these redirects.  I obviously have logged onto this site previously, so I suspect that this has something to do with cookies and Live ID.  I can send you a Fiddler trace of the session if you like - just email me at shan underscore mcarthur at spamcop dot net

    Thanks,

  • This happens to me virtually only (and then always) if I go to a ready-made URL that is pointing at a user's threads.

(I have a few black sheep listed specially - typically because they multi post).

If I go to a forum or to the group page for a set of forums, it doesn't happen.

    -----------------------------

Although in your case too it's happening with "threads", you didn't make this distinction, so I'm adding it here.

  • I've seen this happen from one of my computers, but not others. I would concur that it seems as if it's probably LiveID cookie related.

This is exactly what happens to me, too.  Apparently the server requires a cookie for a correct reply which is not present before the first visit.  (edit: just like Matt Fraser said!)

  • I sent in the information, but I didn't get any response and I see that the forums still have the problem.  Has the problem been identified?  Is there an ETA on when it will be fixed?

    Thanks,
    Shan

  • Hi Shan-

I am still working with my team on this.  We had a big migration and an SE release so the team has been quite busy.

    I'll get back to you.

  • The error was gone for the last couple of weeks but now I'm getting 500 errors again on the first visit with a link...

  • I am still getting this error.  This error makes it very difficult to use the forums because every link I get in email or in messenger fails when I click on it.  Please get this bug triaged higher in the list - I am certain it is a very easy fix.  There is no reason for this site to run with this bug for months on end.

    Thanks,
    Shan
