Validation vs. Buying Retail RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am considering buying a new full retail version of Windows XP Pro. It is very pricey though $300.00!

    A few questions:

Should I keep my current OS and keep getting nagged to validate or wait for the new version of Windows to come out and buy a new version of Windows then?

When is the new Windows version coming out?

If I buy the current version (XP) can it be installed on more than 1 computer (I have a desktop and laptop)?

Other than a "star" appearing in my notification area, will my current copy of windows continue to work and how far will the nagging go. I don't want messages popping up at inopportune times.

My current Windows version is an educational version that came installed when I purchased the computers (desktop and laptop) from the local university.

    Thanks for any assistance.

  • When prompted you can also take advantage of the Genuine Advantage Kit offer. If you feel your current version of Windows is genuine I would recommend you create a free on-line support incident here for further verification. They wil be able to provide you with additional information aorund the validity of the Product Key you are currently using.

  • When the next Windows operating system becomes available sometime in 2007 (known as Windows Vista), it will only upgrade if the operating system it is upgrading from is a "genuine" version of Windows XP.  Since apparently you do not have a genuine version of Windows XP, I would suggest that you purchase a genuine "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional now and perform a "Repair Install".

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

    Example:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional With SP2 - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16837102062

  • Your other question:

"If I buy the current version (XP) can it be installed on more than 1 computer (I have a desktop and laptop)?"

    Answer:

No.  A new license for Windows XP must be purchased if you intend to install Windows XP on another computer. Each computer must have its own unique (and genuine) license.

  • GB, wait till vista is out, then buy XP SP 2 retail. It will hopefully be cheaper by then. it is still a good OS; most people make the mistake of always buying the latest and having to fight with bugs etc. The hackers will go for Vista big time, XP will loose interest for them, so Windows Update will be less of a problem.
