Contacts to Leads Conversion RRS feed

  • Question

  •

Can  I convert a contact to a lead in 3.0?  If so, how?  And once done, where does that legacy data go?  Are there then 2 records, a contact and a lead?  Where does the historical data go?

  • The system is setup to convert Leads to Contacts not visa versa.  Lead records can be converted to Accounts, Opportunities & Contacts.  Once the Lead record is converted it remains in the database but is deactivated so it does not show up on the Active record views.  Much of the field level data moves from the Lead record to the Account or Contact record, but Activities do not move up.

Best practice is to convert a Lead to an Account and Contact and an Opportunity if applicable, as soon as you know you might you might have a good fit for a deal.  From that point forward all historical information is managed at the Account or Contact level.

  • But if you still want to convert a contact to Lead because of your business requirments then you need to develop a functionality using CRM SDK which involves programming. It is not possible outof the box.

  • So, in theory, if I have a list of contacts that all need to be converted to leads, I must re-enter each contact as a lead, correct?

  • You can export them from Contacts and Import them as Leads.

  • Consider using a workflow rule to create a new lead from a contact. The workflow rule can also change the status of the contact.

  • Yes Laura, you are right for CRM 3. There is not built in feature to convert contact to lead. It is not suppose to be like that. You need programming to automate it. Other option is as Dona mentioned that you can export to contacts to CSV file and then import it for leads.
