  • Please try the following: Windows Update not working

  • I tried:

    1. The first thing to do is to see if you installed any new software, and if so, try to restore your computer to a prior good time. Can't, since I have no idea when things went south.

    2. Clear up your Temporary Files folder, Cookies folder & Temporary Internet File folder, reboot and try again. Did it. Best and easy to use the built-in Disk Cleanup utility. Used it.

    3. Flush the Software Distribution Folder. It's all Greek to me. Didn't attempt.

    4. Run system file checker. Did it.

    5. Open Internet Explorer > Tools >Internet Options > Security > Click ‘trusted sites’ icon >Click Sites > uncheck ‘require server verification’. Add sites. Did it.

    6. Do also ensure that you have the latest Windows Update Agent installed. All the troubleshooting says I'm up to date.

    7. Try to re-register the following dll‘s individually. I dare not try this, as I will create a bigger problem and solve nothing. Too inexperienced.

    8. Open IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Security Settings > Ensure that the two boxes “Enable SSL 2” or “Enable SSL 3” are checked. I don't use IE.

    9. Note down your error code and visit this excellent Microsoft Resource : Windows Update Support: Error Codes. No need, I don't get error codes, I get nothing.

    10. If you are recovering from a malware attack, you may also want to have a look at your Hosts file. Can't manage this.

    11. Use our Fix WU tool and see if it helps. I downloaded this, no help.

    12. Use the Windows Update Troubleshooter from Microsoft. I did, and it said it fixed things, but after rebooting, no change.

Sitting here for a couple of hours, trying things, with no improvement, is infuriating, as you may well imagine. I'm at my wits' end, and I'd like to think that wasn't a short distance! I'm beginning to think I'm going to be forced to invest in a new machine. Thanks for trying to help me.

  • There is no issue in your report - it shows as being activated and validated as of 7th March 2016.

It's more likely an issue with WU itself, so I suggest that you repost your exact problems in the Windows Update Community forums here....
