FAQ: How to edit paper / manage your publication list? RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Microsoft Academic Search provides features for users to edit the paper information and manage the publication list for a given author. You can realize the following functions:

    ·         Add paper:

Users are enabled to add papers to an given author. Enter the author edit page and choose “Uploading PDF” option in the left-side menu. Upload the PDF format paper and the system will extract basic information from the paper. We recommend you to review this information generated automatically before submitting request.

You could also add a publication list as a whole by uploading BibTex. Find this feature in the same option menu.

    ·         Remove paper:

Sometimes you may find some papers are wrongly attributed to an author, most of these errors are due to the name disambiguation issue.  In this case you could enter the paper edit page and change the author. Please be careful when choosing the right author in the author suggestion list.

    ·         Merge paper:

If you find two or more papers that should be merged together, click the edit button to the right of the publication title and click Merge Publication.

    ·         Edit paper:

You may edit an individual paper in its edit page, change the title, author/author order, year, etc..

Besides, we make it easy for you to manage the publication list. Instead of opening every paper you need to fix, just enter the author edit page, choose the “Edit publication list” option, and correct the papers directly in the list.

Our user edit function has always been improving, we aim to make it practical and convenient for users to contribute information. Feel free to let us know your comments or suggestions.

  • I have tried both to add a paper through the PDF upload and through a bibtex list. Both did not work out.

The PDF upload could not be completed because of an error message to enter a conference that is in your database. That is unfortunate as there seem to be very fex conferences already there.

The Bibtex started analysing and then gave the error message that it is not possible at the moment.

I have to say that I really like your search tool and would very much like to help to fill it so that it can rival Google's Scholar search. Please let me know what I can do. And maybe you could provide a step-by-step guide how to export publication information from EndNote as they have done on research gate: http://www.researchgate.net/

  • DrScholar: thanks very much for your interest and suppor:) We really appreciate your suggestions.

It’s true that we’re missing many conferences-reason why some of your papers cannot be uploaded-, that's what we’re working hard to improve. If you have a list of conferences related to your publications, please send it to us and we can definitely use it.

About the BibTex problem, it's probably because of the format of the file. Could you doble check it? If it still can't work, please send us the file and we will look into it asap.

  • I have experimented some more with the bibtex import and made it work. However it does not help that much as it also rejects all the information that does not relate to existing entities (Authors, Journals, Conferences, Organizations). So I will wait to see how you continue filling your database by automatic importing.

Manual importing would only be rewarding for the individual users if we could also suggest additions in the other entities.

But keep up your great work!

  • Hello!

I tried to edit my author information and publication list and I think I found some relevant issues....

    Main Issue:

In my case, there are several publications from different authors but with the same name (i.e. Paulo Jesus). The only way I found to remove the papers from my publication list is to edit the papers that don't belong to me, and remove the author (with my name) from the list. However this is not the right thing to do, because the publication from the other author actually exists (and is indexed elsewhere with the same name).

If thing that each author should be able to select the publication that really belong to him, using some kind of ownership concept; or use other attributes (e.g. birthday, homepage, organization,...) to distinguish authors with the same name.

    Smaller Issues:

    - I can not change my interests (currently: Networks & Communications, but it should be: Distributed & Parallel Computing), or maybe we should be able to choose a few from the list of interests;

    - It would be nice if we could add/edit the URL/PDF link of an existing publication;

    - The name of the conference SRDS "Symposium on Reliable Distributed Software " is wrong. It should be "Symposium on Reliable Distributed Systems "

Do you think you could fix this issues?

    Best Regards,

    Paulo Jesus

  • Hello Paulo,

Thanks a lot for your feedback! As you said, name disambiguition is a hard problem and we are still working on it. Yet we don not encourage users to exclude their names from papers by themselves. Instead, you can send us feedback and discribe your requirement and our editor can fix that for you. Actually new release of our website will be online late this month, users are allowed to maintain their own publications by confirming that they are indeed the author of these publications in the new release.

Currently, users cannot change their interests, since it is generated automatically by our system. And PDF link cannot be added to existed papers. We appreciate your suggestion and will add them to our work plan. Hope that you can see changes in our future development.

About the wrong conference name, thanks for your advice, we will fix it asap.

Furthermore, could you please offer your own homepage, or link to your publication list? So that our editors can fix your publication problems manually. Dur to our process, it may take a up to several weeks for the changes to appear online. We appreciate your patience and continuous support!

    Best wishes

  • HEllo,

I have tried to upload a pdf file (my PhD thesis) but failed, without explanations why. I tried the same document from two different links:

    http://www.csc.kth.se/<cite>~yngve/ Sandor -FullThesisasprinted.pdf</cite>

    and

    http://kth.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:350387/FULLTEXT01

    Both failed without explanations.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Ovidiu,

Thanks for your feedback! It's probably caused by invalid content or format which couldn't be recognized by our system. We'll look into this issue and make corresponding changes, please check back several days later. Thanks for your patience and support!

  • Hi Caroline,

Before I offer my criticism/suggestion, let me first say that you have created an extremely useful resource for the academic community. Which prompted me to try and improve it with my suggestions. Once all the minor problems are sorted out, I have no doubt in my mind that this will replace DBLP and ACM DL as my primary source of papers and citation information.

I've been trying to update my profile recently, but it seems many of the additions that the system tells me it accepted are not ultimately published. I'm not sure if it is about the quality of my Bibtex files and/or the meta information on the PDFs (the ones I submit from my website are my camera ready submissions rather than the versions published on the proceedings, so presumably they have less metadata).

If it is useful to look at my publications page, the address is this one: http://www.meneguzzi.eu/felipe/pubs.shtml

One particular example of omission I cannot understand is a short paper I've had in ECAI, which is a conference indexed by your website, but which never shows up in my publications list. The Bibtex I submitted is this one: http://www.meneguzzi.eu/felipe/pubs/ecai-2010.bib, and an equivalent BibTex from DBLP: http://dblp.uni-trier.de/rec/bibtex/conf/ecai/OhMS10 also does not seem to be accepted by your website.

I understand that minor conferences such as ACITA (http://www.usukita.org/?q=acita2010) might not be indexed at the moment, but it would be nice if you could add it to your index.  Also, my PhD thesis is somehow not accepted into the system: http://www.meneguzzi.eu/felipe/pubs/thesis-felipe.bib, but again, I'm not sure if you include those in your index.

    Thanks a bunch,

    Felipe

  • Hi Felipe,

Thanks for your feedback and support on Microsoft Academic Search! We have always been working on improving our service, so criticism/suggestions from users are warmly welcomed.

We'll look into your problem and fix your profile asap. Failure to upload bibtex or PDFs may be caused by the invalid form which cannot be verified or accepted by our system. Currently, we do have a lot of limitations on accepting publications from users directly. And we are trying our best to include more conferences or journals into our system. Maybe you can see the improvement in our coming release, which will be around this March. Thanks again for your patience and continuous support on MAS!

    Best wishes

  • Hello Amber,

Thanks for your information. We suggest that you offer your homepage or CV with detailed information by posting here, or by email. We'll create a clarified account for you, and then you could add your papers.

Another way is that you could upload PDF or BibTeX directly when you sign in Academic Search with your Live ID. Our system will provide an account according to the papers as well. You could update your profile after these papers and meanwhile your personal entry showing online. Thanks again for your concerns.

  • Hello!

I have the exact same problem as Paulo: there is someone with my same name, but who works on a completely different domain of research.

At present, both his papers and my papers appear under his name (Jorge Perez).

I have signed my papers as "Jorge A. Perez" or as "Jorge Andres Perez".

I wonder what is the most appropriate way to separate the publication lists. Here is a link to my publication list:

    http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/indices/a-tree/p/P=eacute=rez:Jorge_A=.html

    Many thanks in advance!

  • Hello-

A number of my papers are linked to the wrong Peter Bosch - can you tell me how to get this fixed?

    best regards,

    Peter Bosch.

  • ... hmm, turns out, i was not the only one with this problem.  Anyways, as a first cut, all computer science papers by Peter Bosch are probably mine.  The person now listed as "Peter Bosch II" is not even called "Peter Bosch".  You can find my information through citeseer, or linkedin (Peter Bosch, Bell Labs or Juniper networks).

  • Hi, I am trying add a PDF to this entry:

    http://academic.research.microsoft.com/Publication/97684/operating-system-performance-in-support-of-real-time-middleware

The URL of the PDF I am trying to add is:

    http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/freeabs_all.jsp?arnumber=1000053

I get this error whenever try to submit this URL.

    1 papers are extracted unsuccessfully.
    0 papers are extracted successfully.

Even I am a redditor, I am not sure whether I am submitting IEEE URLs right or not. It would be great if the Microsoft Academics tell how we should submit URLs for different websites after raising this error.

  • Hi, I really love the features that Microsoft academic offers however the speed of publication updates is really disappointing. Google scholar shows a new publication within days of it being online and here I don’t even see papers from 2011.

Plus, I can’t add an article without a pdf, which is not available public in 95% of cases. I hope these will be improved in the near future.

    Thank you

  • Dear Paulo Jesus

I agree, the system is still not able to properly deal with publications of authors with a common name.

I have the same problem es you.

It is getting even more absurd,

I am coauthoring about 56 publications with myself!

and some publications even have my name 2x on the author list!

  • Go to the author detail page, there is an "edit" button at the upper right corner of author profile section.

  • How can I correct a reference list of a certain paper?

    According to academic, the paper

    http://academic.research.microsoft.com/Publication/50107538/electrically-enhanced-transdermal-delivery-of-insulin-to-chronic-diabetic-rats

cites 13 papers. 11 of them were published at least 2 years after this paper was published. For example, one of my papers published 2008 was already cited the paper mentioned above which was published in 1997.

  • Dear MS academic search team,

sadly the data in the background as well as the user interface have a very low quality. Here the reasons for my statement:

    - the database contains tons of duplications (identical titles, almost identical bibliographic information); the merge function provided is a nightmare

    - the database contains papers with wrong authors; but you can only delete authors not add them

    - papers in the database are missing (althought the conference is in and although other papers of the conference are given), you do not react on corresponding messages

The current data quality may even harm the reputation of scientists ... currently all statistics make the impression to be of random quality which makes the search engine obsolete or even dangerous.

  • Dear MS Academic Search Team,

Your site is truly off the mark on many fronts, and I agree with ConcernedAboutQuality that the site is quite misleading. Please see my profile:

    http://65.54.113.26/Author/13127251/farrukh-chishtie

For example, the research interests stated are simply wrong in my case - who decides these without the explicit consent of the author of these papers? Who allows you to classify me within such narrow domains? I think it is only fair that some effort to contact authors before deciding these interests happens or at least some means to edit these on your console is provided.

So, the relevant research areas in relation to the publications presented are elementary particle physics, quantum field theory and gravitational waves. You report me as someone with natural sciences research interests in nuclear physics, nuclear energy and statistical physics - this is simply incorrect. Kindly correct these on your site as these may have an impact on how people perceive my academic work and research interests.

  • Love the site, but I would like to upload missing papers directly, instead of through URL.  I have no URL at the moment.  Also, several journals are missing:

Advanced Technology Series (SPE One Petro)

    Petroleum Geoscience

  • Hi RGMRTJ,

Thank you for your interest in Microsoft Academic Search! The journal Petroleum Geoscience is an item we are currently indexing, and will appear online shortly.

Currently, to manually add or upload articles individually to the site, this is an action only available to administrators. If you have articles or papers you would like added, please feel free to supply them to us, and we can do our best to have the pages created. You can reach us via email at acadfb@microsoft.com.

We hope you continue to explore and enjoy our site, and if you have any questions or need further assistance please do not hesitate to ask.

    Thanks,

  • Hello friends,

since I found that the FAQ did not really fit to my problem, I launch this question.

After I've inserted a PDF URL and pushed the button "Add", there is no other feedback than the pdf-symbol and the URL that are shown right under the input data field and there's the bush button "Submit".

No way to check out anything like I had expected after reading the FAQ ...

After pushing the button "Submit", I get the message:

    ***********************************

    "1 papers are extracted unsuccessfully"

    <PDF-Logo> http://www.itplanung.com/publications/QM201102.pdf

[Sorry, your request could not be processed at this time, please try again later.]

    ***********************************

I've tried "later" now for months but it does still not work.

    Can you help, please.

    Thank you very much

  • Dear MS Academic Search Team,

In the "Edit Publication List" page, I removed some publications in which one of the authors has same name as mine. However, one still can find that:

the number of publications = comfirmed publications + removed publications !

    Please see the page.

  • Yes, all the WSEAS archieve of the conferences and journals is lost. It is now a juge library and the authors will certainly appreciate if you include it.

I wish to say many thanks to the MIcrosoft Academic Search team. The university option is especially usefull.

In link below, you may find a paper with 1st author a Mr. Arash Talebi. This is Arash Talebi the author writing to you, you have mistakenly mentioned the another Arash Talebi from  Alberta University as the author; however, I the author am from Shahrood University of Technology as you may check via the original article or contact the icife.org conference coordinator.

  • Hello,

I have updated some of my papers in the past. With the PDF URLs I had some difficulties: The field for the URLs is too short! Some of my papers are on servers with very long paths and filenames (e.g. session_author-names_paper-titel.pdf). So the full URL cannot be inserted in your form and cannot be processed.

    Best regards,

    Dirk
