Business backups RRS feed

  • Question

  • I use the home server at home where I have a development server Win2K3 and have it being backed up with the rest of the systems in my household, this seems to work fine and since it is a development server I really don't worry about it too much.

Now the company I work for has gotten a 5 servers we are trying to backup and some of them are virtual severs.  Can WHS be used to back these up?  Will Vail be able to or can the new Vail for business?  Thanks for any help.

  • Homeserver can backup W2K3 and W2K8 based servers no problem, I'm actually using WHS as a secondary backup for the servers in our office. Vail (Windows Home Server 2011) will not be able to do this; You will need Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (formerly Aurora) for this.

  • Thanks Brubber,

I wonder if this will cause a problem with the existing SBS 2003 version, I would prefer not to have it doing backups, it is busy with other matters.  Also if I recall you can't put two SBS on the same system, wonder if this applies to the new version as well.

Do you happend to have a idea at what price point they are going to be selling the SBS at?

fond the pricing: http://www.microsoft.com/sbs/en/us/pricing.aspx  - still trying to figure out the other

  • AFAIK you can have two SBS systems on the same LAN segment, however not both in the same domain (AD), so theoretically you should be able to backup the SBS2003 to the homeserver / SBS2011 Essentials. Mind you, backing up to the SBS2011 Essentials will also use significant resources on the client (SBS2003 server).
