Odd file restore behavior (possibly Windows 7?) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm wondering if anyone else has seen something like this, and whether my config is hosed, or if there's a bug in Windows 7, or if somehow it's expected behavior.

Short description:  I'm seeing an issue where when I "open" a client backup for viewing, the newly mounted virtual (backup) drive shows a mixture of both backup files as well as files from the machine that I'm running the console from (and these are two different machines).

For example, I'm running the console on Client 1 (Windows 7 RTM), obviously connected to the homeserver.  In the console I select a backup of Client 2 (Vista) and open it for viewing.  I wait as the backup view is compiled and the new virtual drive appears.  Interestingly, when I navigate around the new virtual drive, I see this:

Z:\Users\<username>\Desktop ------ This folder shows Client 2's backed up desktop (as expected)
Z:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Desktop ------  This folder shows Client 1's current desktop!  (weird!)
Z:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Downloads  ----- Similarly, this also shows Client 1's download directory!  (weird!)

This is so strange that I'm sure I'm missing something.  But I thought I'd check see if anyone else has seen this.

Now, here's a big caveat.  I found this while testing my system after a "manual" move of my backup database to a new WHS installation.  To perform this move I followed the steps in the "backup" section here:

I don't know this this is related to the move (which went smoothly), or if it's something that has existed all along and I just haven't noticed, or if it's a bug.

Anyway, I'm open to all feedback, comments and suggestions!

    Thanks!

  • This is normal, if rather bizarre, behavior. It has to do with how Windows handles the redirection from "Documents and Settings" to "Users". I'm not going to go into the technical description of what's going on, because I haven't dug into it enough to be 100% certain I have all the edge cases covered, but it's nothing to worry about.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks Ken.  I'm very relieved to hear that and I think you've saved me a ton of continued troubleshooting and perhaps a reinstallation.  I can obviously work around this kind of behavior, I just wanted to ensure it wasn't indicative of other more serious problems with my backup database.

Thanks again, this forum is a fantastic resource.
