Why didn't Midway Airport show up and can I do a radius search beyond 50 miles? RRS feed

  • Question

  • So far I'm liking MapPoint. But the following questions arise:

I mapped a route and requested Airports-Major within 50 miles. MapPoint grabbed O'Hare and a tiny private airport but it didn't show Midway Airport which is closer than O'Hare. However, when I type "Midway Airport" in the search box, it does come up. It comes up as a regular address and not with the airport symbol.

    Is there a glitch?

Also, can I expand the search radius to go beyond 50 miles? For my project, this is going to be a big deal. It's going to be important to see, for example, Milwaukee's airport and Chicago's O'Hare for routes I'm mapping in the vicinity of Beloit, WI. Both airports would be slightly more than 50 miles away.

  • Which version of MapPoint are you using?

I heard someone suggest the limits had been increased in MapPoint 2013, although I haven't tried them.

The 50 mile / 80 km limit is probably partly due to efficiency, but it might also be related to sub-licensing (it makes it easier to extract this information for EULA-restricted uses)

  • I posted a screenshot to confirm the issue exists with MapPoint 2013...

Also, I posted some conjecture about how the glitch occurred.

I thought I had perhaps read something about the 50 mile limit being increased for Find Nearby Places as well, but when I typed in 99, sure enough as soon as I hit enter it changed to 50.

It's not trivial, but there is a way to automate exporting all the locations including airports with some short macro's --

    hope this helps!

  • Eric, thanks for the reply, research and posting.

I called Microsoft about Midway and the rep told me that Midway didn't show because I'm using a Trial version of MapPoint. Hmmm ...

    I'll check out the macros.

  • Yes I don't think I believe that line about the Trial version either!

As far as I (and I'm sure my customers would have told me otherwise if it was the case), the only difference is that nag screen at the beginning. This can sometimes cause problems for some automated programs (e.g. our MPMileage product).
