Problem with installing a .msi file

Question
-
Hello!
I'm trying to install a .msi file for the software called Gladinet, but get the error message:
"the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation". I presume this is just a safety feature or something, but how do i turn it off? Been fooling around in the system registry to find out what to do, but i can't solve it.
Sorry if this is a double-post, but forum search keep sending error messages.Friday, December 5, 2008 6:41 PM

- Download the .msi
- Drag the .msi to the administrator's desktop (if you didn't download to there)
- right click the .msi
- Select Properties from the pop-up menu
- Click the Unblock button

Not internet Explorer, but Opera. It is a homebuilt server. Other programs i have on it is
MyIhome Server - media streaming software
µTorrent
Allway sync
Maybe it isn't wise to install it, but it is for backup to external location of things like photos, and with gladinet and Allway sync, this can be automated. Please tell me of other free and automated ways to backup to external location :) I don't have any external locations for an extra backup of the most important things.
**EDIT**
Downloaded with internet explorer and got a different error message. Unblock button was now there and i can install. Thank you :)- Marked as answer by k4ke Saturday, December 6, 2008 3:06 PM

I assume you're trying to install this in a remote desktop session on your Windows Home Server machine? You should copy the file to the desktop if it's not already there. Then right click it, and you should see a button labeled something like "Unblock". Click that button.

Remote desktop session, yes.
I've tried dragging it to the desktop already, since i can't install from shared folders (obviously), but nothing in the right click menu like "unblock". Tried logging in to the original Administrator account aswell, but no luck. Suggestions?Friday, December 5, 2008 7:12 PM -
Make that "right click and select Properties". Sorry...

I might be slow right now, but nothing in the preferences menu like unblock. Could you try downloading Gladinet .msi and see what you get out of that? I honestly cant find it.Saturday, December 6, 2008 2:13 PM

You didn't download with Internet Explorer then, which is the most common source of security warnings when installing on WHS... Tell us more about your server, please. Home built? OEM (which one)? What else have you installed?
I will observe that I see nothing on the Gladinet web site that suggests that it's compatible with Windows Server 2003 or Windows Home Server, so I would not think it wise to install this software on a WHS computer.

I'm glad you were able to work it out.
As for backing up Windows Home Server, I use robocopy to back my shares up to an external drive on a regular schedule. Then I swap that drive off-site weekly. That's more reliable and faster than trying to restore a server's shares over my internet connection. Especially now that Comcast has a 250 GB cap on monthly transfers; I have more than that in my Music share (lots of lossless audio)...

Mirroring and external drives are not the same. Mirroring is for redundancy, external drives are for backup. While you can attempt to install Gladinet (or any other app) from the server desktop on WHS, installing any app from the server desktop is unsupported and if you have problems, you are pretty much on your own. My advice is to either A) invest in an external hard drive or B) use something like Jungle Disk.Saturday, December 6, 2008 3:41 PMModerator -

Only when the files are copied from an external network or another computer, the files are blocked. The cause for your error is probably something else. You could try:
1. download and run Windows Installer CleanUp from Microsoft to remove all parts of previous install attempts.
2. Download the Gladinet installer again, place in local folder outside WHS shares
3. Download latest msi installer from Microsoft
4. Try again to install, run the installer from a local folder. Also logon directly to the WHS desktop or use mstsc.exe /console (Start, Run) to logon to the WHS desktop from a client computer
If this fails again I suggest you contact Gladinet support or search the web for the error you get.
Personally I wouldn't run this type of beta software on WHS, I think it's highly unlikely they took the special features of WHS into account when building this software. If you choose to proceed please note installing third party apps other then through the console (Add-ins) is unsupported. You could contact Gladinet and ask them if they plan to build WHS Add-in.Saturday, December 6, 2008 3:47 PMModerator
