Use PS3 to access DVD's and movies and show thumbnails.

Question

Is there a way to show the movies thumbnails from WHS on a PS3 menu? If so what directory should they be in to work? Very little out there on this. I know the PS3 recognizes the Windows server but it uses DMS to get at the files. Is there a special directory it looks for - for the movies and thumbnails.

I know there's a PS3MediaServer - that may have this functionalityTuesday, November 24, 2009 11:47 PM

Yes - I have tried this, but it appears it can only do a small video clip of the movie - not the thumbnail of the DVD case. - Still haven't got it to work yet tho.... :(
It's very frustrating, as for all these systems, including WHS... there is no clear defined paths where these thumbnails need to be or how to read them.
I don't get - as much as I LOVE my WHS - why it's not compatable with the games systems without all kinds of add-ins and digging around. It should be clear, concise and staright forward.
I understand PS3 has some restrictions on media types, it sees the windows server easily [without DMS enabled] but never has any files showing... where exactly does the PS3 look for files? make sense...?- Edited by ChAnDeRu Thursday, November 26, 2009 3:09 PM

The PS3 is DLNA compliant; it expects (requires, I think; I don't have a PS3 so you'll have to consult your product documentation to be certain) a DLNA server in order to "see" the media on your server. Windows Home Server is not DLNA-compliant, so you would have to add DLNA software to your server.
(This is unsupported, since there's no DLNA-compliant Windows Home Server add-in that I know of.) TVersity seems like a popular package which is DLNA-compliant, and which some people have installed on their servers.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Thursday, November 26, 2009 9:22 PM

The WHS is DLNA when the DMS is turned on but that's another issue in itself as WiDMS.exe keeps crashing - lol - I have been looking into using Twonky media with the PS3 or Xbox - but have not yet reveived a reply from them as to whether or not either will work better and show the DVD thumnails etc from the WHS "my movies" add-in - the caviate would be to get it to looking like Windows Media edition [all covers shown] without having to buy a another PC.
There are many threads like this but yet, none show how to properly get the end result of cover thumnails showing... :(
I personally am not partial to either system [PS3/XBox] - I just want it to be easy to view DVD/movie's from my WHS - showing the cover thumnails - and hopefully sort by genre etc. and maybe have the added bonus of showing the movie description from "My Movies" - not to much to ask right??? lol
I find the biggest missing thing/info is where to direct any game system to "pick-up" this data effectively and easily.
They all work with the DLNA compliance, but not all follow the same file locations...Thursday, November 26, 2009 3:09 PM -

I have a 360, Win7, and MyMovies and it works great (cover art and all :) ). I didn't buy a PC just for Media Center either (although when I built my current box, I beefed up the hardware for that reason plus running VMs). I added a 2-tuner capture card to my current box, installed 7 (and MyMovies), and use my workstation for everything at the same time (Media Center, DVR, VMs, traditional PC stuff, etc.)

Right - so you're using 360 as a viewer/controller for Media Centre which can read My Movies data. But can it be done without Media Centre? I'd be happy even to get the DVD thumbnail in the vertical menus on the 360 or PS3...
I also have a feeling 360 may be better just to read and be more compatable with WHS though...
Do you have any screen shots?Thursday, November 26, 2009 5:05 PM -

Yes, I'm using my 360 as a Media Center Extender.

Not OOTB. As Ken said, you would need to install a DLNA compliant app, which would be unsupported (I've never tried it either as I want my server as clean and as stable as possible).

That was my thought as well. I have both systems too, but never messed with connecting my PS3 to my server.

No, but all they would show is the same type of screen shots you see at the MyMovies website anyway. :)Thursday, November 26, 2009 5:46 PMModerator -
Great thanks!
WHS has it's own DLNA compliant app built in called Digital Media Server - file WiDMS.exe - shows up in the settings menu.
Maybe that's an option:
Can you run Media Centre in the background on an XP machine? I would use as you do with WHS and a 360.
I didn't undertstand the purpose of the dual capture cards in this scenario though...Thursday, November 26, 2009 6:53 PM -
Great thanks!
Technically, no it doesn't. Digital Media Server is part of the HP add-on package that's installed on the HP MSS, not part of the WHS image from MS. (For example, I don't have that file because I have an OEM license so I don't have any DLNA compliant app on my server.) Also, FYI, any issues with DMS should be addressed to HP.

I never used XP Media Center Edition so I don't know how it works, but I can tell you that in Vista and 7 Media Center doesn't need to be "running" on the client at all (it just needs to be configured so that it can be "extended" to the 360). I would assume XP MCE is the same, but I'm not sure about that. A good forum to ask MC questions is The Green Button.

Well, really nothing other than to say that, depending on the hardware (and the OS) in your client, you may not need another PC. (In other words, if your current "main workstation" is powerful enough, you can have it do multiple tasks at once as I do.)

WHS - I have an ACER and the DMS is built in. I'm working on the support issue... :)
"Running" - right so it's set-up as a PC service to get your 360 screens to show correctly.
Well let's hope Twonky comes thru as that appears to be the most cost effective way to go right now when tied to a PS3 or 360.
Thanks!Thursday, November 26, 2009 8:13 PM -

Oops! Sorry, I got the wrong manufacturer (typing before thinking :) ).

Did anyone find a way to do this?Tuesday, December 22, 2009 6:47 PM

I heard that the PS3 will read any DVD album artwork so long as the thumbnail added in the TAG is no larger than 2MB. I don't have a PS3 or XBOX 360 but heard this from reliable sources. Maybe someone here can try it and let me know for sure.
suggest using METAX for MP4 Tags
