Vista suddenly not valid and product key not readable after three years

Question
-
Hi,
After doing a backup, I was told that copy of Windows Vista Home Premium was no longer valid. I bought this computer new and have been using this computer without a problem for nearly three years. Because of the length of time, I can no longer read the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. To make matters even more interesting, I recently left the US and am in Africa for the next two years and do not have my original Windows CD. Is there anything I can do? I can still use my computer right now, but if I continue to ignore the "An unauthorized change was made to Windows" box will I soon have problems? Thanks so much for any help, and have a great day.

In that case, try telephoning your local Activation Center - see if they can help..
https://www.microsoft.com/licensing/existing-customers/activation-centers.aspx
They have the power to issue new Keys, or refuse - so be nice to them :)

The problem appears to be in the Licensing Store - please try the following.....
Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.
1) Open an Internet Browser window.
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type: net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Restart your computer twice. You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).
Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

Thanks so much. I followed all of the instructions, and I was simply told to activate and then enter the key. My problem of having a sticker that is now unreadable after three years of using the laptop - probably not such an uncommon problem - remains, however, so I seem to be in the exact same place. You mention activating by phone. How do I do that? Would that solve my problem, and is there way they would let me do that considering I can't read my sticker and because the original Windows CD I had is back in the States? Thanks again. I realize that this is a comedy of errors. Another question I have is whether I can go on ignoring the "unauthorized change" notice or whether pretty soon things will no longer work.
