My copy of windows 7 was free with the purchase of an ACER desktop system. When I received my free copy I chose to install it on my ACER laptop. It functioned properly for over a year until I chose to update the drivers using a driver update utility.
should I roll back my drivers?

Unfortunately you broke the terms of the license when you applied it to a PC that it was not supplied with - You can only apply an OEM license to the one machine, the one it came with. You only real recourse now is to purchase a new Win7 license for your laptop, or revert it to the (Vista?) original OS, using the manufacturers Recovery system.
