"this copy of windows in not genuine" (Vista) RRS feed

  • Question

  • lower right corner of my desktop:

    Windows Vista (TM)

    Build 6002

This copy of Windows in not genuine.

Also, my background picture has disappeared.  Tried to put another picture, but did not show up on desktop.  System seems to be running slower, but I am not sure of this.  Keep getting a prompt to "Activate Windows Now", but disappears if no hover or click.

Made no drastic changes, I think yesterday I received/installed an update (think it was updating definitions).  My copy of Windows was genuine yesterday, and every day for about the past 20 or so months!  Researched online, found this forum (and lots of others w/ this problem), followed instructions, ran the tool, below is a copy of the diagnostics.  I rebooted (once), and this did not help.  Please help!!

    THANKS!!

For some reason, the OS is unable to properly read the SLIC table in the BIOS.
The solution is simple - Change the Product Key to the one on your COA sticker, and activate Windows by telephone.

To change the Key, use the link at the bottom of the System Properties page.
Try internet activation first- it may work.
    If it fails,
To activate by phone, click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI   4
    and hit the Enter key
Select your country, and follow the instructions - you will get an automated service, do NOT respond when asked which service you require - this should force an operator to pick up, who can assist you.

  • Noel,

YAY!  It worked!!  And with just the internet (which showed the correction on the system page), plus shutting down then restarting (which got rid of the text stating a problem)!

    Thanks, and Happy New Year!

  • Tfortiggr,

Try clicking start, and typing just "system" into the search bar, then select system; at the bottom of this is the link that needs to be clicked.

    Happy New Year!

  • I get "not enough quota is available to process this command"

The not enough quota message isn't directly caused by the Non-Genuine issue (I suspect it's related to a malware issue, but I have no proof).  In the past users have said that they could get around the quota error by rebooting. They say eventually the quota error will disappear.
