Well, we really are in a pickle because when I looked up the file I found that the only update that contains a copy of this file is KB933928. The problem is, this update can not be uninstalled nor can it be installed more then once.

The only other way to fix the file is to re-install. I don't like giving that option, but at this point, it's the last option that I know of.  You may want to post a description of your problem in one of the Vista Newgroups and see if the community knows of another option.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,

    No, that won't be necessary.

The problem is that your Vista is in, what we call, a 'Mod-Auth' Tamper state.

There are 2 types of Mod-Auth tampers:

    1) A critical system file was modified On Disk - What this means is that the file, located on the hard drive, was modified in some way. This can be caused by random file corruption, a malicious program (spyware, malware, virus) or by manual file modification (by a user of the system). There is also a very small chance that an Update may fail in mid-update and cause this type of issue. As a safety mechanism, Updates are made so that if they fail, they roll back any updating that was done before the failure, but there is an off-chance that the roll back did not occure.

    2) A critical system file was modified In Memory - What this means is the file itself (on the hard drive) is un-modified, but the code, from that file, running in the system, was modified in some way. and is usually caused by a running program that is incompatible with Vista.

I see form the Diagnostic Report that your Mod-Auth tamper is the "On Disk" type. Which means a critical system file (in your case slc.dll) has been modified or has become corrupt. You can see this in your Diagnostic Report by looking the words "File Mismatch:" under the "File Scan Data-->" line

To resolve the issue, we need to replace the bad file with a unmodified/uncorrupted (known good) copy. Normally, the way we do this is have you Uninstall then Re-install a past Update that is known to contain that file. But since SP1 has been released, it would be simpler to just install SP1 (found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&DisplayLang=en).

Please try this and tell me if it resolved your issue, or not.

    Thank you,

it actually a sticky situation, as I initially installed vista on a 20 gig partition  too small, I realise now. There is 3 gigs left after drivers install and 6 months use. Turned down the page file to 300 megs, tried cleaning a buch of stuff, to no avail.

When I launch SP1 standalone install, it tells me I need at least 5 gigs free on that partition.

    what a pickle.

I guess I need to go to safe mode to remove an anterior update, please tell me which one...

    thanks for your help.

  • I'm sure there is a way, but I haven't messed with partitions for some time.

I definitely recommend asking for help in the Vista Newsgroups. Some very smart people hang out there and I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.
