Hi,
It depends if you want to use only CRM. CRM framework has rich set of entities ranging from Sales, marketing to services. Also you can leverage on xRM framework.
The other option is to create an ASP.Net web app which talks to the CRM database through CRM services. In this scenario you can use CRM for admin functions.
In my opinion go for the first way. Use CRM 2011 and create the whole app. Since CRM is a web app, you can expose it to your outside customers as IFD deployment.

Have u searched in search engines, have u downloaded the customer portal zip file inside that itself u will have the documentation.
