BSOD: Driver_IRQL_less_than_or_equal - USBEHCI.SYS - Hauppauge Nova-T-500 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I believe I already know what is causing this issue so I'm posting in here in the hope there might be a chance of getting a USB hotfix created for Windows Server 2003.  I built a DIY WHS which has run perfectly ever since the product went RTM (wow that seems a long time ago, roll on Vail). Earlier this year (2010) I installed an Hauppauge Nova-T-500 DVB-T dual tuner card (using the XP driver) into my WHS and started getting BSOD related server restarts (apart from that the tuner card is working perfectly). I believe the BSOD is caused by a conflict with VIA USB controllers which my DIY WHS does use.

This week I posted about the issue here: http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=20040

A helpful moderator pointed me towards this 30+ page topic: http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=9888&page=33 (this page has the hotfix)

It seems many devoted users spent a lot of time researching this and they found it was a conflict with an updated USBEHCI.SYS file, the original RTM file from Windows XP did not exhibit this issue. Happauge raised this directly with Microsoft and working together resulted in a hotfix being released here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/969238?p=1

I have discovered an MSDN blog page that links to the latest USB hotfixes here: http://blogs.msdn.com/usbcoreblog/archive/2009/11/13/list-of-the-latest-usb-hotfixes-for-each-windows-version.aspx

Sadly the most recent patch for Windows Server 2003 has not resolved the issue.  Lastly I'll post the crash dump analysis:

  • You should raise a bug on MS Connect but I wouldn't hold your breath as tuners are not supported on Windows Home Server.

  • Thanks for the reply.  I believe this is a potential bug in the USB drivers so could possibly be having an impact on any USB device (as the XP KB article points to potential data corruption issues when using USB HDD's).  I think given how much expanding WHS storage with USB drives is highlighted it is something worth investigating.  The fact a tuner is highlighting the problem is really just coincidence, I just hope Microsoft can look past the fact it's a tuner.

    Thanks again.

Do you have any USB hard drives you can connect to the server?

Thanks for the response. I already have an external USB drive connected to the WHS in order to expand the storage.  I have now received additional information from Hauppauge which confirms the bug in USBEHCI.SYS affects devices that use a particular VIA USB controller which could be any number of devices (it just so happens that this one is a tuner but could easily be a USB HDD).
