Question
-
I am having the EXACT same issue. I purchased an HP laptop about 2 years ago with Windows Vista installed. It has worked just fine until about a week ago and is in a count down mode of number of days before it stops working. I have activated and validated it several times but the key is back the next day with one day fewer..

Hello Tamibishop,
No your issue is not the same.
If your copy of Windows came pre-installed in your laptop, yet your Diagnostic Report shows Retail (it should show OEM SLP).
I think I know what has happened.
You reinstalled Windows, but instead of using the Recovery Software that came with the laptop (Not manufacturers that pre-install windows in thier computers are Required to include a way for the customer to reinstall Windows. Most do not include a disk anymore, but instead have the recovery software on a hidden partition on the computer's hard drive.) You used a Retail version of Vista to reinstall.
OEM Product Keys (the one from the sticker on the bottom of your laptop) will not work in Retail software, so during install, you couldn't enter the product key. However, Vista will allow you to install without a Product Key. In that case, Vista uses it own Keyless Install/Trial key instead. The Keyless Install/Trial key allows the customer to user Vista for 30 days. Using that key, Vista can not be Activated and a Valid key must be entered to continue using Vista after the 30 days. This is why your copy of Vista is using the keyless Install/Trial key X9HTF-MKJQQ-XK376-TJ7T4-76PKF.
To fix your issue, please reinstall Windows using the recover software that came with your computer (see the documentation that came with your computer for details on how to do this) or, since you reinstall Windows using Retail software, it is likely that you overwrote the hidden partion that contained the Recovery Software. In that case, contact the computer's manufacturer for a replacment copy.
Thank you,
Darin MS
