Adding a HPC 2012 compute node to a HPC 2008R2 head node RRS feed

    I have just installed Server 2012 and then HPC Pack 2012 SP1 with the aim of testing compatible of our software with 2012 iterations.

    Firstly I tried to configure the machine as a compute node. The HPC 2008 Pack SP4 head node would not recognise the node so I tried exporting an xml file for a working HPC 2008 compute node. I edited the name, mac address and GUID which it accepted but I could not bring the node into service. Its health remained unapproved.

    The log states "The attribute 'Version' for manager 'NetBootManager' does not match the manager's assembly. The assembly's attribute is '4.0.0.0', while the manager declaration specifies '3.0.0.0'. Change the manager attribute to Version='4.0.0.0'"

    Is there anyway to allow me to use both 2012 and 2008 compute nodes on the same HPC grid?

  • Hi Pete,

    HPC Pack 2008 R2 SP4 HeadNode cannot talk to HPC Pack 2012 SP1 Compute Nodes. This is not supported scenarios.

    Besides, if you want to install HPC Pack 2008 R2 SP4 on Windows Server 2012 to make it a HeadNode or a ComputeNode, such forward compatibility is as well not supported.

    To use both Windows Server 2012 and 2008 R2 compute nodes on the same HPC cluster, you can install HPC Pack 2012 SP1 on WS 2012 to make it a HeadNode, and then install HPC Pack 2012 SP1 on WS 2012 and WS 2008 R2 to make them ComputeNodes.

  • Try the following steps. It works to me.

    Setup a a compute node with HPC2008R2. Wipe the os and reload windows2102 with same hostname and install hpc 2012 package. Don't delete this compute node on the headnode or computer account on the domain.

    Since 2008R2 headnode  has this node already, as soon as hpc2012 installed with right headnode name the connection to computenode will be restored automatically.

    My Environment is Headnode HPC2008R2SP3 on windows2008R2 OS. Computing node HPC2012 on windows 2012 OS.

    Try and see if this method work with HPC2008R2SP4 and HPC2012SP1
