Re-activating Windows goes to a blank desktop screen RRS feed

  • I have been asked to look at a computer as it comes up with (paraphrased) "This copy of Windows is not activated, do you wish to activate /Yes/No"
    If you click No, to goes back to the logon screen.
    If you click Yes, it goes to the desktop wallpaper.  There is a mouse cursor and nothing else (I waited 30 mins).  Ctrl/Alt/Del does nothing.
    Evidently the machine has been running, and 2 days ago came up with this behavior.
    Running in Safe mode is the only way to get into the machine, but then the network etc is disabled.
    The copy of Windows XP Pro is from Microsoft direct.
    I have copies of the order to Microsoft, and the CD which Microsoft sent out.

    I have no doubt that formatting and reinstalling will fix the problem, but that would be a last resort.

    The installed copy of Office 2003 is a Volume Licensing edition of Office, which is not licensed for sale to and use by individual consumers.  Furthermore, this copy of Office was installed with a Blocked Volume Licensing Key.  Typically a Blocked Key is one that was legitimately issued to a larger business, educational or governmental organization, but subsequently that organization lost control of the Product Key and the Product Key was widely distributed thru software piracy.
