Various issues - copy fails - backup fails - file conflicts - dropping connection - chkdsk

Question
-
I'm very new to WHS but I finally got my system up and somewhat running.
- Currently I have about 2.25TB in the data pool and kicked off a copy application (SyncBackPro) to copy about 90GB from a NAS unit to the Software folder on my WHS. and I'm currently on my 3rd attempt to complete the copy. My last attempt resulted in about 9000 errors "The filename, directory name, or volumen label syntax is incorrect". What the heck is going on? Recently I copied all the stuff from various drives to the NAS unit thus nothing should be wrong with stuff.
- When I connected I'm informed "Network At Risk", I clicked on the icon and then the details for "File Conflicts"
- Error 1 - The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". This is the second time I've seen this problem. The first time I went through a bit of ____ removing all of the entries that were represented by this error.
- Error 2 - The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation".
- These two messages resulted from my copy attempt.
- With the 2nd copy attempt (previous attempt) I had a similar results and I had to run CHKDSK to clear the data problems.
- My SyncBackPro just completed the latest attempt and claims that all is good. I just reran the copy and now all is OK except for the message in the "Home Network Health" window. It seems that the message is now bogus, how do I remove the message if it bogus?
- Any idea why I'm getting these failures with the copy?
- I've got three system connected to the WHS (2 - WinXP x32 and 1 Vista x64) one of the WinXP systems keep loosing the connection to the WHS. I see a small blue box with a message telling me that the connection has been lost and it is attempting to reconnect. This seems to be rather constant on this system
- Backup issue
- Both of the WinXP systems have attempted to backup and both fail each time a backup is attempted. By default they should be backed up after midnight.
- My Vista x64 system has never attempted a backup, I set it up for auto backup
- Possibly I've done something wrong but I have no idea what.

Please follow the instructions here to run chkdsk on all the disks in your server. What you describe sounds much more like you have a problem with your storage subsystem than that you coppied files inappropriately, and running chkdsk should help you identify which drive or drives are failing.
Also, for the network health warnings, you will find more information, along with suggestions on how to deal with them, here .

How to you copy the data? When accessing data on WHS you must use UNC adressing like \\myserver\myshare (or map that address to a drive folder). You must not copy files into d:\shares\myshare for example.

OK I think I did the copy correctly, I address the WHS system as \\WHS-01\Software wehre WHS-01 is the ID of my WHS system and Software is a folder that was created by the installation of WHS.
If I did it wrong then I'm lost and don't understand.Monday, June 8, 2009 6:59 AM -
Thanks Ken - I've been burried in lots of other issues but I just kicked off the Chkdsk as you suggested. Hopefully this will resolve my issue. I'll let you know.Monday, June 8, 2009 7:01 AM

I've learned recently that the first step to solving any issue related to WHS problems is to run Chkdsk /f on any system having problems. It's amazing how many problems I have fixed with this one step.Monday, June 8, 2009 4:15 PM

Actually, that's chkdsk /r. :) And you need to run it for a wide range of issues because disk errors (even minor ones) can interfere with Windows Home Server (and other Windows components) proper functioning. Remember that Windows Home Server does a cluster by cluster backup of your client PC every night; that means that even a recoverable error could result in bad data being backed up, which (in my opinion) is worse than a failed backup and a warning that you have a problem.

I have much the same problem. I have a HP Ex475 w/ four WD 1 TB drives. The sys has been updated to PP2. I have a lot of large video files (4-5 GB). Everything was working hunky-dory until I decided I did not want to use duplication on my videos. I created a new folder at the root level of the shared folders and began copying the videos to that new folder by performing a cut & paste from within Shared Folders on Server. After a few files were moved, it failed, reporting something like "network location no longer available". Thinking this may be a LAN issue, I switched to RDC and began the process again - still working within Shared Folders and the same thing happened. It is my understanding using RDC would prevent the file transfer from having to pass through the NIC and, therefore, I believe this should rule out a network problem. I tried unchecking duplication for all shared folders, which did not help. Since the problem began, every time I reboot, the system reports file conflicts - usually different files each time. Also, backup has begun failing very frequently and the only way I can resolve that problem so far is to delete the backups as the backup service has stopped.
All drives are shown as "healthy". I ran chkdsk on all drives twice using the cmd file described by Ken in another thread. The only errors reported were indexing errors. No bad clusters were found. The problem still persisted.
I am in the process of removing one drive at a time from the pool, both for testing and to try to save my data. If I find the cause of the problem, I'll report to this thread. Otherwise, this is just another "file conflict" report and to keep this thread alive. Of corse, any help would be appreciated.Tuesday, June 30, 2009 4:41 PM -
I removed all but the main drive from the pool and still had the problem. I re-installed WHS on that drive and still had the problem. Chkdsk reveiled no errors. I then removed that drive and used another as my main drive, re-installed WHS - no errors. I have since added the 2 remaining drives and it seems to be holding. My last step (which I dread) will be to add the questionable drive back into the pool and see what happens.
