  • Hello.

    Just want to ask this;

    1)

Do i need to take and pass first the 70-640 and 70-642 before taking the 70-646 exam?

    or

I can directly take the 70-646 exam without taking the first two?

    2)

If ever, i do take the 70-646 and luckily pass it, should i be recognized as MCITP?

    or

still, i need to pass the 70-640 and 70-642 first to be recognize as MCTIP?

    hoping for your replies.

    THANKS!

  • Hi Jefcauilan,

You need to pass all three exams to earn the MCITP 2008 Server Admin. You can take them in any order. But they follow a pattern of skills development - so if you're doing all three I'd suggest start with 70-640, then 70-642 etc.

Microsoft are retiring the MCITP certificates across their whole range of exams. They're being replaced with MCSA certificates instead.

The MCITP retires on July 31, 2013.

Presently, as a transitional arrangement, if you pass all three exams Microsoft are awarding both the MCITP: Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008 and MCSA Windows Server 2008 certificates until the MCITP retires on July 31, 2013.

After July 31, 2013 you'll be awarded the new MCSA. The MCSA is comprised of the same three exams.

Also, 70-640 and 70-642 are both Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certifications. If you pass either, or both, of these before July 31, 2013 you'll be awarded MCTS certification. After July 31, 2013 the exams remain available but the MCTS certification won't be awarded.

    Certification Overview (FAQ Section):

    • Q. Will I be able to earn a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certification for passing exams that count towards the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification?
    • A. You will continue to earn an MCTS for passing Exams 70-640 and 70-642 until July 31, 2013. Also until July 31, 2013, when you earn an MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification, you will receive the MCITP: Server Administrator certification. After July 31, 2013, the MCITP: Server Administrator and MCITP: Enterprise Administrator certifications will be retired.

If i take, 70-646 and pass it, what title should i earn? MCITP? MCTS? or MCSA?

  • If you pass any single Microsoft Certified exam you will be awarded the generic Microsoft Certified Professional status.

70-646, taken on it's own, won't earn you any other certification titles.

You can take exam in any order. Howver to become MCITP:SA, you need to pass three exam (70-640,70-642,70-646). If you are already MCSA on Server 2003, then you need to pass 2 exam (70-648,70-646).

Passing one exam will recongnize as MCTS.
