Exception encountered while syncing using SQL AZURE Data Sync CTP2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • While performing Data Sync using SQL Azure Data Sync CTP2, between 2 databases, some sync groups are working fine while some groups are giving errors likeà

    ·         Sync Failed: 'Type=Microsoft.Synchronization.Data.DbSyncException,Message=An unexpected error occurred when applying batch file C:\Resources\directory\bc388c0236844e2a9d837f5bce163e28.SyncServiceWorkerRole.LS1\syncsvcjob4bfljqzu32vusuouerumdaao\e4e84efd-61e7-47d6-9e7d-d6ef2ef0bc07.batch. • you might want to post this on the Sql Azure Labs Support forum: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlazurelabssupport/threads

is this log from Sync Agent side or from the Sql Azure Data Sync Logs? is this on upload or download?

    Monday, July 4, 2011 5:35 AM
  • This is from SQL Azure Data Sync Logs on Upload.

I am transferring data from my On Premise to Cloud DB. (Sync to HUB)

    Monday, July 4, 2011 5:50 AM
  • do you consistently get this error from the same sync group? how big are the changes in terms of size/row count?

    Monday, July 4, 2011 6:08 AM
  • Yes, getting this error for the same sync group. The row count is not much. Around 200-300K Rows.

I did some Table Schema changes on my On Premise DB and Cloud DB. When i tried to sync it was taking the previous schema only.

I dropped my cloud db, recreated it, added it again to SQL Azure Data Sync, and got the above error.

  • did you deprovision your on-premise DB after you dropped the cloud DB? when you dropped the Cloud DB, did you remove it from the Sync group? or did you create a new sync group?

i'm guessing the Data Sync metadata/objects wasnt completely cleaned up.

  • How to de provision my on premise DB??

On removing my cloud DB, i removed my sync groups also..and created new sync groups..

can u suggest how to de provision my on premise DB. i shall try after doing that?

    Monday, July 4, 2011 6:47 AM
  • De Provisioning means re-add Agent Key/On Premise DB in the Sync Service Tool?

    Monday, July 4, 2011 6:53 AM
  • I did a deprovisioning. But still some groups work fine while some are giving errors like -->

Sync Failed: 'Type=Microsoft.Synchronization.Data.DbSyncException,Message=An unexpected error occurred when applying batch file C:\Resources\directory\bc388c0236844e2a9d837f5bce163e28.SyncServiceWorkerRole.LS1\syncsvcjobl2xwkjc3eslyi0yyp2gdb3ya\db692e36-0e6b-4cf7-949e-03b4f119d884.batch. See the inner exception for more details. - Job Status: Failed,'

  • hard to tell what the exception is without access to the Data Sync detailed logs.

I suggest, you try starting from a completely clean setup.

    1. Remove all syncgroups in Data Sync

    2. Remove all database registrations from both Data Sync and Sync Agent

    3. deprovision both cloud and on-premise database

    4. start all over again.

    Monday, July 4, 2011 10:04 AM
  • Ok I will try that.

In the meantime, can you please tell from where can I get the Detailed Logs? Do we have access to it?

    Monday, July 4, 2011 10:43 AM
  • i dont think the detailed log is exposed in the Data Sync UI. you can try the workaround above and let's just wait for the Data Sync team when they get back after their 4th of july holidays.

  • Hi,

Above steps didnt help. Still the old schema is being referred. The Cloud DB is new. The On Premise DB is an old one. I think de provisioning is not removing the older meta data.

  • can you confirm that after deprovisioning, there are still tables, triggers, UDTs and stored procedures prefixed with "DSS" in your databases?
    Monday, July 4, 2011 1:09 PM
  • Only Stored Procedure with schema dss are left. Tables/Triggers are removed.

    Monday, July 4, 2011 1:36 PM
  • getting errors now like -->

Sync Failed: 'Type=Microsoft.Synchronization.Data.DbSyncException,Message=An unexpected error occurred when applying batch file C:\Resources\directory\bc388c0236844e2a9d837f5bce163e28.SyncServiceWorkerRole.LS1\syncsvcjob4bfljqzu32vusuouerumdaao\e4e84efd-61e7-47d6-9e7d-d6ef2ef0bc07.batch. See the inner exception for more details. - Job Status: Failed,'

    Monday, July 4, 2011 1:36 PM
  • if the deprovisioning doesnt clean up everything, delete/drop the objects prefix with DSS: stored procs, triggers, and there will be a User Defined Type for each table as well.

when you create a new sync group, it should recreate all these objects and the metadata.

    Monday, July 4, 2011 1:46 PM
  • De-Provisioned eveyrthing. Now SQL Triggers/Tables/SP with DSS prefix..

    Error again as ->

Sync Failed: 'Type=Microsoft.Synchronization.Data.DbSyncException,Message=An unexpected error occurred when applying batch file C:\Resources\directory\bc388c0236844e2a9d837f5bce163e28.SyncServiceWorkerRole.LS1\syncsvcjobq0sgpiskrfyjdber352gju3v\98eba794-1d16-4987-993b-30e62c55cdde.batch. See the inner exception for more details. - Job Status: Failed,'

  • My Apologizes if the previos post was confusing..

I have remvoed everything from my on premise db which starts with dss.

I am not getting any schema issues, but the same error as i mentioned in the starting is coming.

Sync Failed: 'Type=Microsoft.Synchronization.Data.DbSyncException,Message=An unexpected error occurred when applying batch file C:\Resources\directory\bc388c0236844e2a9d837f5bce163e28.SyncServiceWorkerRole.LS1\syncsvcjobq0sgpiskrfyjdber352gju3v\98eba794-1d16-4987-993b-30e62c55cdde.batch. • have you cleaned up your cloud db as well?
    Tuesday, July 5, 2011 1:07 AM
  • yes...i created a new cloud db...hence no files with dss..
    Tuesday, July 5, 2011 3:12 AM
  • has you resolved this already?
    Thursday, July 14, 2011 8:07 AM
  • After deprovisioning, delete your old sync group and create a new one, and then sync the new one.

If sync fails, try to sync a couple times again and see if it can resume from where it failed and complete successfully.

If it fails, let me know how many rows got applied, what the total size of your db is, and whether there is a row with size > 10 MB.
