Toshiba Satellite Activation Error RRS feed

  • Recently reformatted a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5900 laptop that came installed with Windows Vista Home Prem.
    Lately I have been getting "need to activate windows" popup's even though I had already activated Vista.

    I have taken it back to the store that "fixed" it, and reinstalled all my software.  The main difference is I no longer had a "restore" disc from Toshiba and they instead used my "Anytime Upgrade" disc I believe.

    Now I am getting a Error message that states the following:

    And Before you recommend it, the Bois is current (v1.9)...I confirmed that with Toshiba's support site prior to posting here.

    Is there a way to fix this without re-installing the whole OS?

    Computers, which are built by large manufactures that come with Windows Pre-Installed, come with two (2) Product Keys:

    A)   OEM SLP: This key comes pre-installed in Windows, when it comes from the Factory. This key is geared to work with the special instructions found only on that Manufacturer's computer hardware. So when Windows was installed using the OEM SLP key (at the factory) Vista looks at the motherboard and sees the special instructions and Self-Activates. (that's why you did not need to Activate your computer after you brought it home)

     

    B)    COA SLP: This is the Product key that you see on the sticker on the side (or bottom) of your computer. It is a valid product key, but should only be used in limited situations. The key must be activated by Phone. (Note: All manufacturers that use the OEM SLP system are required by contract to include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker, that has a COA SLP key, on the computer)

     

       Your Windows is using an OEM SLP key, but (for whatever reason) cannot see the special instructions in the computer’s motherboard and is unable to Self-Activate.

      To fix the issue, you will need to change out the OEM SLP key with the COA SLP key.  The normal way to do this is to click the ‘Start’ button, right-click ‘Computer’, select ‘Properties’ and then click ‘Change Product Key’ (located in the lower right-hand side of the window). Enter the COA SLP key and follow the instructions in the Change Product Key Wizard.

     

    Alternate steps to change the product key

     

    1)    Click the Start button

    2)    Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key

    3)    Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer

    4)    Click the Next button.

    5)    You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok

    6)    It will attempt to Activate by the internet and will return an Invalid Key error (this is ok, continue to step 7)

    7)    Click the Start button

    8)    Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key

    9)    Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button

    10) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone

     

    NOTE: when you call that number, you will first hear an Automated Voice. If the Automated Voice gives you an option to talk to a Live Activation Rep., select that option. If not, do not enter any numbers. This should force the Automated Voice to transfer you to a Live Activation Rep. Trying to Activate thru the Automated Voice will not work, in your case; only thru the Live Activation Rep. will your Activation be successful.


    If that doesn't work, Vista's Licensing Store may be corrupt or unreadable.  Follow the below steps to recreate the Store.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming
    \Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to
    complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

  • You can reactivate your Windows Vista installation by performing the following:

    1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  slui.exe 4

    2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

    3. Select your Country.

    4. Follow the instructions for phone activation (no charge).

  • When I do that option this is the 1st screen, if I re-enter key, is just gives me a failed screen with the error previously entered.

    I keep forgetting to finish typing thoughts...

    Anyway, if I use the "contact microsoft to help resolve this issue" option this is what I get. So as I have seen others post this same response without a screenshot I thought I would take it to the next step. Showing you it does not give a option.

    I managed to google the NA MS act line for Vista however that is NO use with out the phone code windows should be providing me. I have had to manually do this with a Windows XP machine due to multiple hardware changes before. I KNOW what the option looks like, and what I should be seeing, however it just isn't there in this case.

  • That is a awesome reply, Darin.

    I had to use a program to retrieve the product key before I formatting, and I never use "restore" discs due to all the extra junk on it, I just want windows installed. That would explain why the product key is not working, since the reason I had to do that was because I had to have a warranty repair done on the laptop and when it was shipped back, there was no product key sticker anymore.  Of course I do know you can't sell w/o that sticker, but did not know that it was actually a different key and therefore didn't think anything of it.

    I am currently attempting to contact Toshiba regarding getting a replacement sticker....This should be fun....

  • So I have spent 8 hours on the phone with toshiba, telling me to call microsoft, and microsoft offering to sell me a product id, or to call toshiba....
    The customer service at Microsoft is WAY nicer than Toshiba, if I treated customers like that at MY call center job, I wouldn't have a job...

    I tell you what, after all this...I will NEVER buy another Toshiba anything...

    So they will not replace the product ID sticker that was removed while at the repair depot back in april...i somewhat understand this as it has been a long time, however I just didn't think it was THIS important... The laptop had it installed, so I know it is legit..

    This just isn't fair, which shouldn't be a big deal, except THEY removed it...I guess I will just format my other laptop that HAS a sticker still and put linux on it, so I can use this product code...ugh
