key not vaild, please purchase another one

Question
-
A while back i purchased and built a new system to run win7 for gaming and general use. So i gave my old system to my brother in law so he could use it as a family pc. Apart from 2 hard drives the system is exactly the same. Same motherboard, same cpu, same ram.. you get the picture.
After a fresh install of Vista and putting the product key in all seemed fine and well until about 2 weeks ago when all of a sudden he is getting a messag saying 'key not vaild, please purchase another one'
He's tried imputting the product key again but he now gets the message that the key has been used.
The copy of Vista is valid and genuine
Any help with this would be appreciated as niether of us feels that a new key should be purchased to run what is a 'same system' pc.
Thanks in advance.Wednesday, March 3, 2010 2:16 PM

Hello FuzzyDj,
The only thing I am seeing is that Vista just needs to be Activated. What happens when he attepts to Activate by Phone?
Alternate way to launch the Activate by Phone wizard:
Click the Start button, and type slui 4 in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window.
If he is unable to get the Actiavte by Phone wizard to launch, try resetting Vista's Licensing Store:
1) Open an Internet Browser window.
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type: net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Restart your computer twice.
12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.
Thank you,

To help us analyze and troubleshoot a non-genuine notification issue you may be experiencing, please download and run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool.
Once you run the tool, click on the Continue button, then click on the Copy button and Paste the report into your post, along with your question.
Thank you!

As requested, my brother in law has ran the Diag'Tool and the copied info is posted below.
The question is why it keeps asking for a new product key when the one used is valid?
