Re-installing XP Pro on a new Hard Drive using a WGA Disk

Question
-
I had a computer running XP Pro with a WGA Key. The computer crashed. I am 99% sure that it's the hard drive. My question is, If I decide to replace the hard drive or if I decide to buy a Bare-bones Kit, can I use my WGA Disk to re-install the operating system? The existing Motherboard & CPU are a bit outdated (PC133 RAM & a 1.3G AMD Athlon CPU).Thursday, July 24, 2008 3:13 PM

Ranger1205,
It's been my experience that the License that comes with the WGA Kit in the USA is a full retail license, and that means as Carey posted, you can move the installation from one computer to another, and make changes to basic hardware components like motherboards (and HDDs), as long as that license is installed and activated on one computer at a time.
We have seen reports from Forum posters in other regions of the world, spedifically the Asia region, where the WGA Kit comes with a "supplemental EULA" that essentiallyimposes the restrictions of an OEM license on the WGA kit's license, namely, that the license can't be moved to any other computer.
So, if your WGA kit did not come with that restrictive supplemental EULA, you can put your WGA Kit's license back onto your to-be-repaired computer, or move it to a new fully assembled or barebones computer.

Thank you Dan and Carey. I just wanted to make sure before I wasted my money on buying a new OS and/or computer.Thursday, July 24, 2008 6:13 PM
