CHKDSK runs every time at startup & tuneup wont defrag RRS feed

    Running CHKDSK from prompt returns:

    C:\Documents and Settings\paul>chkdsk /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

  • In a command window type chkntfs /x c

Reboot. Chkdsk should now not run at startup but most likely there is a need to run chkdsk so open a command window and type in chkdsk /f /r c

You will receive the same message that chkdsk cannot run so select Y to run it at reboot. After chkdsk runs you should be ok.
