locked
problems uninstalling-still have locked folders RRS feed

  • Question

  • Microsoft Vista Home Premium SP1

I have locked files (over 9000) since uninstalling  WLOC including back ups made by WLOC (I had back up turned off) and the back up source files. Most I can still access, some have shotcuts where the file used to be in explorer, some are on third party software files and require me to "Run as Administrator" to run that software anymore. It locked executables (in My Documents Download folder) for software such as Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. I had Ad-Aware uninstalled, and Spybot S&D tea timer turned off when I Installed WLOC. It also locked associated log files, gif files, and htm files. The uninstall tool did not unlock any of these, it also did not remove anything WLOC put in the task manager. I have ruled out SP1 and UAC as I have locked files on my XP SP2 machine also after uninstalling WLOC. Is there any way to unlock these files? If anyone knows I would appreciate the help.

    Thank you for your time

  • The only files that would be "locked" or protected by OneCare would be the backup folder and its contents along with the OneCare database and some program files.

I've never heard of any other files being locked after OneCare was installed or uninstalled. I suggest contacting support as I believe that the problem was caused by a conflict with some other software on your PC, perhaps Spybot, even with Tea-Timer disabled.

  • Thank you for your quick response.
It shouldn't have locked any files at all since I turned back up off when I found that it wouldn't do what I wanted it to. Unless it put a back up task in the task manager when it installed, as it did do some other strange things. I never had any password protected, or locked  files before but I sure do now. The Problem reports and solutions dose show that the  back up wizzard (WLOC ??) did fail 6 times between 3:03 and 3:11 on 3/24/08, it shows a "Generic Error from WinSS" for WLOC at 4:27AM same date, and WLOC "Stoped Working" 4:31AM same date.  (probably because the task manager was tring to run it and I had it turned off  ??) I have the boxes checked to allow all error reports to be sent to Microsoft, they were sent.

The above was in the Windows system log for the same date. Most of the other problems I had were after the uninstall and are already fixed. I found a lot of good information in this forum. Thank you. I installed WLOC from the download site and then entered my retail key to activate it, haven't even had the CD out of the case. All other AV/Spyware products were uninstalled except Spybot S&D and it was turned off. Everything that came with Vista was turned on. (I assumed WLOC would turn that off if necessary) I will keep digging if you or someone else dosen't have any other information. If I find a solution I will post it here, if thats OK. I've looked at the Vista forums, haven't found anything usefull there, but I'll check around and keep looking.

  • You're welcome for the reply. I do hope that you are able to resolve the remaining issues and I'm glad that the forums were helpful for you so far.

The generic WinSS error is not likely to be the cause, though I can't be certain of that. Based on your description, I suspect that the Tune-up ran overnight after the install and it may be that the locked files occurred due to the backup service failing while scanning for files to report as in need of backup. That scan happens even if you have backup disabled.

Good luck to you - and OneCare support remains an option for you to consider.

  • Thanks again

I used the links provided and sent an email Help Request. I did install the active X control on my XP machine and tried to send the colected files three times, I don't think it sent the files. It apparently sent my email as I got a confirmation and service # at the end of it all. I have found that the problems I am having with other software are probably due to SP1 and UAC and not locked files. (example- I now have to right click on my accounting software, "Run as Administrator" to change any options.)

    Thanks again for your Help
