Document properties in Word 2007

  Hi,
  
  My organisation has a number of document templates that were created in Word 2003. Documents based on these templates have properties that can be edited by users to include metadata such as Customer Name, Contract No, Inspection dates, Author's name etc. These properties are then propagated through the documents automatically and fields are populated according to their values.
  
  Basing a new Word 2007 document on one of these templates, I cannot seem to edit the properties and make them propagate as originally intended. Accessing and editing the document properties is ok, but the propagation doesn't seem to take place.
  
  Does anyone have any ideas as to the solution?
