Home network messaging

Question
-
Has anyone requested an add-in for network messaging? I would like to be able to send messages to users on computers in the home network and would really be nice to have scheduling capabilities to send reminders to the computers with a pop up window like we used to have with NT. I don't want to go with a full scale IM type program just something like the old network popup messages that could send reminders to the kids computers to remember to do a task or to remind myself to do jobs.
Also, my network consists of computers with dual boot XP Home & Vista Ultimate and also mutliple user accounts on each workstation. I'd like to just send the message to the computer and whoever is logged in would get the pop-up message.

OK. I think I have found my messaging and computer control software that will fill the bill for what I want on the home server. It's NetControl and I install it on all my client pc's and on the server and now from the server I can control or just view whats on the screens of all the pc's in the house. I can also shut them down or send them into standby. I can do this all from the web so I can see whats on the computers at home while at work. I'm including the link for folks like myself that have been looking for more power for the home server and to boost it's utility. I'm not advertising, just passing along something that looks like a good product at a price I can live with. They don't have Vista advertised yet but their remote desktop works even with my XP home edition so I feel good that they will get the Vista added soon. I am going to mark this thread as answered since I now have pretty much all the features that I was looking for at the time of my original post.
Thanks.

You could just enable the Messenger service on the LAN and use "net send" (be sure to keep it firewalled from the internet or you'll get SPAMMED) from any CMD prompt. Why make an add-in for that?Saturday, July 21, 2007 10:57 PM

You've got a bunch of options ranging from turning on the Messenger service on your client machines and using NET SEND to using an IM client of some sort. I would be inclined to use the IM client, personally, but from what you say, the Messenger service would probably be a better answer.Sunday, July 22, 2007 12:25 AMModerator

But I thought I'd read where messenger was removed from Vista, I've been trying to get Net Send to work but haven't had any luck. Also, if you had a scheduler you could have those reminders sent out from the server, the IM's that I am familiar with are for live chat, not reminders. It would be nice to have a calendar type interface to control the message scheduling and also make a web page off of the home server for extended families to keep up with kids ball game schedules and things like that. I may be asking for too many things in one but with whiist installed it shouldn't be too hard to make a web page for the calendar interface for the message schedules.Sunday, July 22, 2007 2:47 AM

You should be able to find out if the Messenger service has been removed. I don't have a Vista machine at the moment, but there's got to be an administration tool that lets you manipulate services. (Maybe more than one; there's a couple of ways to find out about services in XP.) The service should be named Messenger.
As for what you're asking for, I understand what you want. I can think of any number of tools that will do some or all of what you seek. Doesn't Outlook 2007 have some sort of shared calendar capability built in, for instance? Storing that on the server would take care of a lot of what you're asking for. Just a thought...Sunday, July 22, 2007 3:07 AMModerator -
windows messenger service has been remove from windows vista because it typically was only used for spam.
There are a number of free replacements like messagePal http://www.fileflash.com/program/10710/ (I have not tried this software), which also use netsend.Sunday, July 22, 2007 4:34 AM -
Ok, I've got the net send working with the server and the XP clients but still need a way to schedule them to send from the server at predetermined times for reminders.
Also, does anyone know if the messenger program could be copied over to Vista and set up as a service to enable the program on that platform? I looked at the Path to executable in XP and it shows "C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" so it appears to be a common system program with switches.
Just to update my own question, I did some research and apparently Vista does not want to be a party to anything such as messenger so the best bet is to find a third party product. I really did like the way the messenger boxes popped-up to the user on the screen and it worked fine for homeserver and all my XP boxes but that leaves out the Vista side and I'd rather have one app that covers the whole group.

ColinWH,
Does "this" product that you noted have a scheduler built into it? I like the price they quote for messenger but I am testing lantalk-net at the moment and it does have a scheduler but I can't get the home server to recognize the msi file they provide, has anyone installed lantalk-net on a home server and were you able to run it as an add-in or did you have to install the program from the desktop, and if so, does it run as administrator? I really want to use this more for reminders than for chat or IM type stuff.
Thanks,

No, it doesn't, sorry.
I use Outlook on my SBS network for that I'm afraid!

Thanks for the update. I haven't tried the lantalk on the homeserver yet, will probably give it a go tonight. It does work with Vista and XP home but I really don't like the IM interface look that it has, I really liked the way the net send messages looked and their delivery, too back Vista decided to shut them down. If anyone has other candidates that might be closer to the net send type messages please give me a shout.
I did find a web calendar that I linked to my homeserver site using whiist, I can't use it just yet with my messages but at least I have a web calendar that I can share with family and friends and easily control it from any client or the home server.
I tried the lantalk on the server and it worked fine, I also used it's scheduler and tested a message and it also worked from the server to XP Home and Vista. The big drawback was when I went to the price calculator and realized that it's going to cost me over $90.00 for the five licenses I'd need. So I guess I'm back to looking for something that will work but won't break the budget. The scheduler was not very user friendly and in fact down right confusing and much harder to setup than it should have been. If the cost wasn't so high I might have tried to live with it but as I have already said I don't like the IM interface and would rather have the net send type message box. If anyone else has anything I could try I would very much appreciate the input.
