Small forum migration improvement request RRS feed

  • Question

  • The last set of forums from the 2.x site are due to be moved soon.  I humbly request a small improvement in the migration software.  Ever since the first set of forums were moved, I have a huge problem finding my moved answers back.  Neither Live Search, Google nor forum search allows finding these answers back by my given name or nick.  I have to remember a key phrase from that answer, not easy after many thousands of answers.  It usually takes me at least 5 minutes but I often just give up and move on.

    I can find back answers for threads that got started on the 3.x site.  Thanks to me putting my given name in the signature, Google indexes it because it is part of the post.

    That could be a solution to me losing track of another 4000+ answers in the threads that are to be moved soon.  It matters a great deal to me, these particular answers often have a lot of code in them, not easily reproduced from scratch again.  Please modify the migration software to add the poster's signature to the post.

    Please.

  • Next release should be early/mid December and I don't believe any migrations are to happen before it. And Yes, it's a pretty simple thing to code :)

  • I feel I must be missing something here, but does the "My Threads" view not work for your purpose?

  • Huh?  Maybe I'm missing something.  The search box in My Threads contains a cue banner that reads "Search All MSDN Forums".  When I type something, it does exactly that, returning threads that I never contributed to.  Is this supposed to work differently?

  • OK, I misunderstood. You want to be able to search thru posts you've made, not just browse...

    We are now using Live Search for the site, and it indexes author (or, it should) as well as contents of the posts. We will be working with the MSDN Search app team in the future to add featurs that will help users futher refine their searches.

  • Yes, I want to find answers back that I remember posting so I can help out another OP.  The new Live Search is pretty effective at finding posts with my name in it.  From posts at forums.microsoft.com.  I don't need any help with that, Google works just fine.

    Please take this thread as an example, it got moved from forums 2.x:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vssetup/thread/f940cac1-956b-4c3e-a323-02f9c4e6a538

    I tried to find it back through Live Search.
    "nobugz regedit": 25 hits, not that answer
    "nobugz pendingfilerenameoperations": 0 hits
    "nobugz first second empty": 79 hits, not that answer
    "hpassant regedit": 4 hits, not that answer
    "passant regedit": 36 hits, not that answer

    Whammo, 5+ minutes of my life gone, nothing to show for it.

    Please, you must see what an incredibly frustrating problem that is.  Losing track of my posts at forums.microsoft.com would make this so much worse.

    Please.

  • I'm working on adding Message Author to the crawler pages right now.  With that in place, you should be able to Domain-scope your search with 'nobugz'. Would this accomplish what you are trying to do? Just asking because you mention 'signature' which is slightly different.

  • Also, not sure if you are aware that you can do something such as this now

    http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=meta%3ASearch.MSForums.ThreadContributorUserName%28nobugz%29+site%3Asocial.msdn.microsoft.com&form=QBRE&qb=2

    Forums 3.x Threads where NoBugz is a contributor

  • Okay, great, that found the post.  Autocomplete should help me remember the long query string.  Too bad Google doesn't index metadata.

    I just proposed the signature line because that's what helps me find posts I made on 3.x.  If you can make it work with the poster's nick, that would be great too.  Better.

    Just one follow-up question: how would I "domain-scope my search with nobugz"?  I'm not familiar with the term, I use site: at Google.

  • site: was all I meant, along with Nobugz. The results would not be as technically accurate as the live search meta query above since it'd return results where a users name was mentioned. But it'll work for google and live. I'll add username to the crawler page for next release then.

    In the meantime, you can use/tweak the one above on Live Search now :)

  • Next release, that will be a while.  Back to the original idea of giving migrated posts a signature line.  Either from the originating site or this site, it doesn't matter.  It strikes me as something that ought to be easy to implement.  Am I wrong?

    Maybe some part of the migration didn't complete or something, but "My Threads" only shows threads that I have posted to _after_ the migration. Threads that I posted to _before_ the forums were migrated to the new platform does not appear under "My Threads".

  • Yup, we had a bug in the migration that didn't populate My Threads. WE've found the issue and are working on a fix.

    Thanks

  • The change is to the page that's rendered to crawlers. For instance here's part of the crawler rendered data for this thread

    <LI>
      <P>
          Well, my threads got moved.  No signature.  Having a Fish Called Wanda moment here: disapPOINTED!  Blam, Blam.  I AM thinking.
          <br/>
          <hr class="sig"/>Hans Passant.
       </P>
       <DIV>nobugz</DIV>
    </LI>

    The <DIV>nobugz</DIV> is now included in the output, so as threads are crawled, the poster's display name will always be included.
