Utilising Multiple Backup Disks for Server Backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am one of the people who have a reasonable sized (4TB) DVD library presently ripped to DE folders on WHSv1.

As DE has been removed from the RC, thought the way to at least have duplicate copies of the DVD's would be to install matching disks in the server. Each DVD folder having an equivalent size backup disk. Once the original backup of those shares was done there would not be much in the way of changes but it would be nice to be able to refresh the backup as a part of nightly backup.

My problem is with the backup wizard. It enables you to specify more than one backup disk but, unless I've missed it, you cannot select different shares to be backed up to different specified backup disks. What is the point behind being able to have more than one backup disk when you can only use one of them at a time. It does not appear you can setup multiple backups at the same time. For example backup system and clients on Sunday night, Music Monday night and so on.  I do not understand where the WHS team are heading with backup. It seems excessively crippled.

I could, assuming I go with the RTM and the jury is out at present, manually change the backup settings and manually run a backup for each DVD folder as required. But what a pain in the neck. It would be far easier to use an application like synctoy and to use that to mirror the DVD's etc to a backup drive.

Backing up of the server and client backups to a particular backup disk is fine and for me is not a problem. The clients have very little data on them so setting up the backup process to just back the server OS and clients to a backup disk is fine.

Anyone have any idea as to why you get the option specify more than a single backup disk but do not have an option to select what is backed up to which disk. It really does seem somewhat strange if not stupid.

  • Short answer: Server BU in RC1 via the Dashboard is broken. Temp workarounds:

Turn off the Server BU in the dashboard and use the native Server08/R2 BU app to see if you can accomplish your goals

Script it using wbadmin in a batch file and call them via the Task Sceduler. Write as many as you want. Swithces at:

I agree with everything you have posted here, and you're not the only one who thinks the current implementation is way off the mark.

I still can't quite get my head around this, I originally thought that if I had for example, a 2TB (the maximum limit) folder full of Videos, and say a 500GB folder of Music, that I would have to make sure that I had at the very least, a 2TB backup drive and a 500GB backup drive, not including anywhere for client backups.

However, if this was the case, as the backup system currently stands, it would only use one drive for the backup, once this drive was full, it would then start filling the second disk, assuming that I was going to take the first disk off-site, or somewhere safe.

That being true, I'm not actually going to have a viable backup of either my Videos, or Music, as they would not fit on either disks together.

    Is this correct?

The way I look at it, it would be much better (and easier) if you could nominate a backup on a per-folder basis. For example, I have two 2TB drives for Videos, and two 500GB drives for Music. One of each becomes the storage drive, where the data resides, and can be shared/streamed etc. and one of each remaining drives is then nominated as that folders backup drive.

I appreciate that you're still going to require other disks for client and server backups, I was just running with the idea that you had 500GB of Music and 2TB of Video for my example.

I'll add this to the Connect discussion and see what MS make of it.

    Daryl.
