Dell Laptop OEM Win7 MGA Failure RRS feed

  • Dell Laptop with its original OEM hard drive Win7 Home Premium installation, all activated from the factory and working fine for over a year. I upgraded the hard drive, to a 1Tb unit by cloning the original hard drive about a month ago. All has been working fine until yesterday, but now I´m getting a pop up saying the installation is not genuine. At the bottom of the pop up failure message there is a failure code 0x8004fe21. I´ve read several threads here, and done two things:

    I´ve tried deleting the Update for Windows KB971033 and running the validation tool again, but the installation fails with code 0xC8000247

    I´ve run the driver update tools from Intel, and there doesn´t appear to be any problems reported.

    I am totally lost! I do have the option to go back to the original hard drive, but obviously I upgraded it for a good reason, and would like to fix the problem with the new drive.

    Just want to stop anyone wasting their time on this, because since my first post, I´ve worked away at the problem and think I´ve made progress.

    I´ve been working through the posts on here and have done the SFC and chkdsk routines. Chkdsk found no problems, but SFC reported:

    So at this stage, there was obviously still problems, and the MGADiag output was exactly the same as my first post.

    I then installed the latest Intel Rapid Storage Driver, as this was indicated in another post as a potential source of mismatches.

    I then tried windows update, and got a message to the effect that windows update could not run due to missing components, so I run the "Fix Windows Update" option in control panel, and from there, update is running again. There is no longer any incidences of the MGA error. I plan to run the machine for a longer period, to see if the problems come back or if it has now returned to a stable state.

    For the moment, no one please spend any time on this post.

  • Well, pleased to say progress has definitely been made. The latest MGADiag report is below, and shows the only mismatched files are those that should be in the WAT directory, and if I´ve understood correctly from the posts on here, they are all related to KB971033 which I deleted earlier. My question now is, should I leave KB971033 uninstalled, or should I reinstall it. I´ve nothing to worry about in the sense that everything is legit on the machine, but if it is going to cause me another days lost time, then it can go chase itself in the big bad recycle bin in the sky.

  • Further development. When I shut down windows last night, automatic updates were active, and while shutting down, ".... installing 1 update". So this morning, checked it out, and sure enough, KB971033 has been reinstalled. MGADiag now reports no file mismatches. So, I now need to just use the system and find out if it is stable now. Although I´m obviously pleased to get the system up and running I´m still seriously hacked off at losing a full day due to MS and their activation technologies. I went to bed at 3am because of this! Why should I, as a legitimate user, be penalised in this way? Lets hope that one day MS has to pay for it´s own misdemeanours in the same way the banks in the UK have had to. Current diagnostic report as below. I would appreciate if any of the experts here could kindly review it in case they see anything that I´ve missed. I´ll give it a week and if the system stays stable, I´ll mark the thread as answered :)
