Hello ZBugay,
Computers, which are built by large manufactures that come with Vista Pre-Installed, come with two (2) Product Keys:A) OEM SLP: This key comes pre-installed in Vista, when it comes from the Factory. This key is geared to work with the special instructions found only on that Manufacturer's computer hardware. So when Vista was installed using the OEM SLP key (at the factory) Vista looks at the motherboard and sees the special instructions and Self-Activates. (that's why you did not need to Activate your computer after you brought it home)
B) COA SLP: This is the Product key that you see on the sticker on the side (or bottom) of your computer. It is a valid product key, but should only be used in limited situations. The key must be activated by Phone. (Note: All manufacturers that use the OEM SLP system are required by contract to include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker, that has a COA SLP key, on the computer)
Your Vista is using an OEM SLP key, but (for whatever reason) cannot see the special instructions in the computer’s motherboard and is unable to Self-Activate.
To fix the issue, you will need to change out the OEM SLP key with the COA SLP key. The normal way to do this is to click the ‘Start’ button, right-click ‘Computer’, select ‘Properties’ and then click ‘Change Product Key’ (located in the lower right-hand side of the window). Enter the COA SLP key and follow the instructions in the Change Product Key Wizard.
Alternate steps to change the product key
1) Click the Start button
2) Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key
3) Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer
4) Click the Next button.
5) You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok
6) It will attempt to Activate by the internet and will return an Invalid Key error (this is ok, continue to step 7)
7) Click the Start button
8) Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key
9) Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button
10) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If for whatever reason, you are unable to change the product key or changing the product key (and then Activating) doesn't resolve the issue, try the below steps for repairing Vista's Licensing store:
1) Open Internet Browser
2) Type %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Reboot Twice
12) You may be required to re-enter the Product Key and/or Re-Activate. Use the Activate by Phone method.
Thank you,

Hello ZBugay,
Please download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool found at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012.
Run the Tool, click "Continue" then click the "Copy" button. Return to this Thread and Paste the report into the thread along with a detailed description of the issue you are experiencing. Please also post the error code you get (if any) when you validate by clicking "Validate Windows" here: www.microsoft.com/genuine. The error code will be gray and in brackets at the end of the message on the page that says validation failed. (It'll look something like this: [0xC004C000]).
For great advice on all topics XP, visit http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxpFriday, September 11, 2009 8:15 PM -
Thank you very much Dan, for replying as fast as you did. I am very, very happy to have a response.
I did as you asked, and below is the diagnostics report.
I also went and clicked on "Validate Windows" and it says, "
Windows Vista Genuine Validation Results
Validation Incomplete
The validation service is unable to determine whether this copy of Windows Vista is genuine.
Recommended Solution
Run validation again later
Validate your copy of Windows again later by going to http://www.Microsoft.com/genuine and clicking Validate Windows .
[0xC004C533]"
That is a copy and paste of what it says.
Further Detailed Report of my problem: In the bottom right hand corner of my screen, it says,
"Windows Vista (TM)
Build 6002
This copy of Windows is not genuine."
Every time I start my computer up, it prompts me to put in a new registry key.
Here is the Diagnostics report.

Hello, having the same issue here.... wallpaper/background goes black, stays black even if i try to change it...
I do not see any COA SLP key on my computer as Darin prescribed.
PLEASE repost your own report to your OWN NEW thread -- this avoids confusion for all, and ensures that your problem is seen by everyone for the best outcome.

I also had the same desktop message saying my Windows was not genuine, but my computer properties said Windows WAS activated. I found a very easy way to fix. I checked my recent program and windows updates to see what might have changed and found this new software package installed from Microsoft - aha...light bulb:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable – x86 9.0.30729.6161
I uninstalled it and the message was gone. I reinstalled, restarted my computer and all is fine now.

This thread is YWO YEARS OLD!
- but thanks for the information, anyhow :)
There are many reasons why Windows may report as non-genuine - it would have been interesting to see your MGADiag report prior to your fix.
It will be interesting to see the 'fixed' report anhow (In A NEW THREAD please!) so that we can check that you have actually fixed it, rather than hidden it.

I have the same problem with my Gateway laptop, but it happened AFTER I restored my computer to an earlier time period, due to freezing up 5 seconds after full-boot. I HAVE a (Partial) key on the bottom of my laptop, but some of the digits are faded, and rubbed out. I can't read it, fully. It's ok, as I will not be buying another Windows computer if I can't fix this one. I have 4 computers (of my own). They are as listed: Gateway Windows XP Media Center Edition Desktop computer, Gateway Windows Vista (SP 1), Compaq Presario CQ62 Windows 7 (SP 1), and MacBook Pro (OS X version 10.7.2). My household computers (Everyone, BUT me.) Acer Windows Vista (SP 2), HP Windows Vista (Late '09; SP 2), MacBook Air (OS X 10.6), iMac (OS X 10.7.2). As you can probably tell, we are Apple fans. ( I suppose. I didn't purchase all of them.) I use the Gateway laptop for gaming, and I think it's annoying to have my Background change every 5 minutes because of something I already did.Friday, January 13, 2012 2:46 AM

PLEASE NOTE: I have reposted this to its own thread as advised to others below. You may find my new thread at:
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/is/genuinevista/thread/15356975-6ac1-4601-acff-c2e44e89df8e
I have the same problem. Suddenly my HP laptop is telling me that my copy of Windows Vista Home Premium is not genuine, Build 6002.
The laptop was purchased at a Walmart SuperCenter in the USA. Windows Vista came factory installed. It now wants me to reinstall windows.
After reading through the threads, I downloaded and ran the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool. Here are the results of that:

======================================================================================The Product Key listed in the report is NOT the one on the back of my laptop! I have tried to enter the OEM to reactivate Windows, but it said that it is not correct also.
I am going to try the next steps given here in this forum & will advise. I seriously doubt it will work, since nothing else has, but I will try nonetheless. :)
