  • Question

  • About a year ago my computer got a virus and i took it to my friend to repair it. He repaired it and it was working fine until two weeks ago i got a messages in my computer. I ran some test and followed directions. This was the first message i got

This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation.

The product key found on this computer is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked.

I went ahead and did some more test and i got this.........i have the product key from when i bought my computer and i was wondering if i can do anything with it to fix the problem. Im not friends with the guy who fixed my computer so i cant take it to him and i dont have enough money to have someone take a look at it.

  • Hello Drod,

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. The Windows XP Professional and Office Professional Edition 2003 product keys installed on this computer was not assigned by Microsoft. The key is counterfeit and was most likely generated by a key generator. The product key found on your computer has been detected on multiple computers. Product keys are only allowed to be used on one computer unless otherwise specified in the end user licensing agreement (EULA). You will find numerous sites where this key has been posted.  Use your favorite search engine and paste in the product key.  Below could be a possible scenario.

If you want to keep Windows XP Pro installed on the computer, then your best option is to participate in the Genuine Windows Offer and purchase a WGA Kit for $149 USD.  This will be a full version of Windows XP Professional.  You will be emailed a Product Key that can be used immediately for your currently non- genuine installation of XP Pro, and then about 2-3 weeks later you will receive a genuine Microsoft Windows XP Pro full retail CD and COA, which you can use to do a clean installation (recommended). I noticed from reading your MGA Diagnostic results that your system is an HP. Another option would be contacting HP Technical support @ (800) 474-6836 and request how to purchase the recovery media software for your particular model. Please visit HP and Compaq Desktop PCs -  Obtaining a Recovery CD or DVD set located @ this URL:

There are situations which can cause Windows and Office to become non-genuine. Let me give one example.  Customers have taken in their systems along with all the software received when purchasing their system. The customer picks up the system and viola' no problems whatsoever until they need to download an update or even a template used with MS Office. Suddenly their system is non-genuine. The customer's computer was not installed with their software but either a blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) or a keygen’d product key. Also the software could work for several weeks, months or even a year or more then suddenly becomes blocked.

This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer. You will need to uninstall Windows XP Professional and Office Professional Edition 2003 before any further complications occur from being non-genuine. As a customer there are several options available for you to get Genuine. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take. Also please review the Validation Advisor for further guidance at:

    https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

Thank you and hope this will resolve your situation.

  • In order to resolve your non-genuine licensing issue, please visit: www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on "Validate Windows". When validation fails, click on the Get Genuine button which will provide information on your available options which include how to acquire a WGA Kit.
