You’re right in stating that there’s very little in the way of books for upgrade exams (and not just for SQL Server either).
What I usually do is use the Skills Measured for the individual exams covered by the upgrade exam to research content using Books Online, Technical articles and Blogs. I also use the release notes to research what’s new in a release (just remember
to also read release notes for each service pack/service release)
Example
Exam
70-453 is the upgrade exam to 2008 Administrator so I would use the skills measured for exams
70-432 and
70-450 to research content online.
