printer sharing problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • I can't seem to share my printers.  I have a desktop computer (named HP) to which two printers are connected directly.  I can print to them without problem from the HP.  The HP is connected to my laptop through a wireless network.  I can share files between the two computers but I can't print from the laptop.

My onecare circle includes the HP as a Hub PC and the laptop.

When I click on "Change settings" while viewing my OneCare circle,  the "Settings"  Window opens.  I then click on the "Printer Sharing" Tab to see that the printer sharing check box is checked.  If I click on the refresh button for refreshing the list of printers, the only item that shows up is the laptop computer - no Printers.  What is the problem?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Thanks for your message Steve:

As a last resort, last night I tried uninstalling all the printers listed in my printers and faxes window on my laptop.  Then, when I rebooted my computer, Live OneCare automatically set the printers up and I successfully printed test pages.  I'd like to know what the problem was but if I don't figure it out I'll be content with being able to print now.

One last question though, I'm curious about your reference to 64 bit vs 32 bit.  My desktop has a AMD Athlon 64 processor which, as I understand it, uses(?) 64 bit architecture.  My Toshiba satellite M70 laptop runs on an Intel Pentium M Processor 740.  Not sure what the architecture is on the latter.

    Thanks again.

  • For printer sharing in OneCare to work, the printer must be shared via OneCare on the PC that has the printer connected to it and the PCs that will be using this printer must be using an OS of the same type as the host PC. If the laptop is using Vista 64 bit edition and the desktop is running Vista 32 bit edition, sharing will not work. A PC with XP 32 bit and Vista 32 bit can share printers using OneCare printer sharing, too.
OneCare cannot share a printer that is not connected to one of the PCs in the Circle, that is a wireless printer or a network printer.
It is possible that your laptop is not seen to be on the same subnet within your network based on the way your router works, if the laptop is wirelessly connected. You may be able to change the sharing settings by doing the following:

Open OneCare on each of the computers.

    Click Change Settings

On the firewall tab, click configure firewall

If the network is shown as Public, click Change Location to change it to "Home or Work."

    Click the Advanced Settings button

    Click Network connections tab.

If there are multiple active connections shown, you may need to disable the extras in your Windows network connections settings. (Network and Sharing Center, manage connections, in Vista; Right click My Network Places and select Properties on the Start menu in XP)

On the Ports and Protocols tab, add a check mark next to File and Printer Sharing - for subnet and Internet if the first setting alone (after all of the above are verified) does not allow Sharing to work.

Note that you may need to share the printer manually, not using the OneCare printer sharing feature if you do the above or if your computers are not using the same architecture (32 bit/64 bit).

If all of the above fail, please contact support.

  •  Glad to read that you got it working. I've marked you own post as the answer.
The architecture refers to what operating system is running. If you right click on Computer in Vista, you'll see if you are running 32 bit or 64 bit Vista. You are probably using 32 bit, though many newer PCs are shipping with 64 bit Vista these days. The PC is capable of using the 64 bit version of Vista, but that doesn't affect the compatibility issue for drivers in OneCare for Printer Sharing since the OS is 32 bit on both machines.
