SyncToy 2.1 will not start

    Question

  • When I go to start SyncToy 2.1, it does not start.

    This is what I have done so far:
    1.  All required .NET applications are installed, and latest updates installed too
    2.  I have re-installed 2.1 a couple of times
    3.  Same thing happens when I do 2.0 also
    4.  After un-installing, I remove all references to synctoy in the registry, and deleted any orphaned directories
    5.  When starting SyncToy for the first time (on both 2.0 and 2.1), I am prompted to particpate in the Customer Experience thing, but then SyncToy does not start.
    6.  Had successfully ran SyncToy 2.0 on previous laptop, until that harddrive failed. New laptop can't get it to work.
    7.  Running Windows XP Professional SP3

    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • HI dderr,

    Can not found the folder "synctoy\2.0" and log file? it seems "customer experience question" has blocked SyncToy running due to some unknown reason.

    Could you pls take a try as below?

    1. run Regedit
    2. open branch: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\SyncToy
    3. set Value FirstTimeUser=1
    4. set Value CustomerFeedback=0
    5. run synctoy again.

    there is a registry demo as below, you may import to registry directly.

    ----------------------------------
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\SyncToy]
    "InstallLocation"="D:\\Program Files\\SyncToy 2.1\\"
    "FirstTimeUser"=dword:00000001
    "CustomerFeedback"=dword:00000000
    "UpgradedToV20RTM"=dword:00000001
    "LastFolderPair"=""

  • HI,

    Could you pls follow the steps as below to take a check:

    1. run synctoy 2.1
    2. open "windows task manager -> processes", can you find a process named "SyncToy.exe"?
    3. share out synctoy log, the log on Windows XP: "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\SyncToy\2.0\SyncToyLog.log"

    thanks.

  • Thanks for the reply Joey..

    After installing synctoy 2.1 and executing it, I get the customer experience question, but program does not start.  I check to see if the task SyncToy.exe is running and it is not.

    I checked "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\SyncToy\2.0\SyncToyLog.log" and there is no 2.0 directory .  There is just a file named SyncToySEtup-00.DAT .  I also did a search for that file name, and it does not exsist.

    Any other ideas?

  • I am having the same problem on a Windows 7 as dderr.   I have tried the suggested fixes, but notthing seems to work.  I also think the customer experience question is causing the problem.  Any other suggestions?  My registry has the setting of 3 and 4 mentioned above.  Both 2.0 and 2.1 SyncToy act the same way.

  • I have discovered this is a .NET issue. What a great piece of software!

    There is a utility produced by someone other than Microsoft that analyzes and cleans up your .NET install. After I ran that utility, Synctoy and another app started working.

    Here is the software by Adam Stebner:

    Uninstalling and reinstalling .NET did not work.  Also, the utility took several minutes to run with no status, so just let it do its thing and it will eventually complete successfully. Several minutes.

    Good luck and happy syncing.

    You are a genius! I fixed this problem by following your suggestion. Here is the procedure.

    1. Remove the .NET files by .NET Framework Cleanup Tool.

    2. Install dotnetfx.exe

    3. Install SyncToy 2.1

    Done!

    Thank you very much!
