Is there any way to rename the computer hosting CRM 2011?

    Question

  • When I renamed the computer Deployment Manager could no longer find the MSCRM database.

In Deployment Manager I only see options for disable/enable server or delete server.

    Thanks!

  • Try doing a Repair of the installation. Go to the list of Installed Programs in Control Panel on the Windows Server then select Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Server from the list and select Uninstall/Change, then choose Repair.

  • I'm not sure if a repair will help; a reparit reinstalls files and resets registry keys, but won't change any of the configuration settings, which I think is what you need.

Can you describe your environment in more detail ? Do you just have one server running CRM, SQL and Reporting Services, or are these roles split onto different servers ? If the roles are split, which server(s) did you rename ?

In general, if you've renamed a SQL Server and/or the Reporting Server, then you will need to ensure that this software continues to work after the rename, before you think about CRM. For the SQL server, you'll probably have to update data in the master..sysservers table, which you do with the sp_dropserver and sp_addserver system stored procedures. For Reporting Services, check you can still access Report Manager, and if not have a look at the Reporting Services configuration.

For the CRM Server, the simplest option could well be to uninstall CRM, reinstall CRM giving a dummy organisation name, then import the live organisation database.

  • I mentioned the Repair option due to this post http://msdynamicscrmblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/issues-after-re-naming-ms-crm-servers.html but it can obviously become more complicated depending on your environment as David has described.
