  You have a lot of themes available on the internet.. Install them and customize your desktop to your taste...

  You can make windows transparent in XP using a software .

  Even the latest version of style XP supports transparent icons

  Go to control Panel > System, > Advanced > Performance area > Settings button Visual Effects tab "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop"

   

  this should be enough.....there is no need to download any extra software
