Upgrade MCITP Database administrator SQL 2005 to 2008 - "Retiring 05 credential question." RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I remember seeing an article (somewhere?) to suggest that the credential 'MCITP - Database Administrator SQL SERVER 2005' will be potentially retiring around Apr 2011.

I plan to achieve this credential late this year, and then to Achieve 'MCITP - Database Administrator SQL SERVER 2008' Additionally.

If the Certification/Credential is retired, my questions are as follows:

1.) Can the 'MCITP - Database Administrator SQL SERVER 2005' certification still be upgraded to 2008 (MCITP - Database Administrator SQL SERVER 2008) After 'MCITP - Database Administrator SQL SERVER 2005' has retired???? Or must this be done before the 05 Certification/Credential is retired?????

2.) If a person with 'MCITP - Database Administrator SQL SERVER 2005' certification passes exam 'Exam 70-453' (Upgrade Your MCITP SQL 2005 to MCITP SQL 2008) will that person then have Both certs??? (MCITP SQL05, & MCITP SQL08 DBA?)

3.) Is there any reason a person would want 'Both' rather than 'Transitioning'? (For example you might still want to place both 05 & 08 SQL DBA credentials on your resume as a lot of organisations still use both!)

4.) What (have others / are others) planning to do?

Thanks you for taking thr time to read my post, Any help or advise to this query is appreciated!

    Cheers

  • SQL 2005 base support will end in 2011 as per the article http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=2855

However that is for the non service packed edition. Mainstream for SQL 2005 SP3 will end a long while after that, tho the MSDBA exams retired in March 2009 which is later than the retirement of SQL 200

    Now to answer your questions

    1. Yes you can still upgrade once the MCITP SQL 2005 has been retired. The exam will still be available after the MCITP retires. For example 70-447 which is the MCDBA to MCITP SQL 2005 is still available.

    2. Yes you get both certs because you pass the requirements for the MCITP SQL 2008 which includes the MCTS.

    3. Transitioning means that you also have skills in the new technology. This means that you will have both sets of certifications. So transitioning in this case does not mean leaving behind.

    4. I have the MCITP SQL 2005 DBA and DBD certifications and I just finished upgrading my DBD to SQL 2008 and plan to do the upgrade to DBA 2008 later.

  • Hi,

I plan to do the upgrade exam at the end of this year or beginning of next year. Have only just finished all the exams to be MCITP DBA SQLServer 2005.

Thanks for posing the questions, didn't know that after transition both certificates would be valuable.

    Kind Regards,

    Vera
