Several errors on installtion of WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've installed WHS a few times before and was feeling fairly comfortable with the process.  Today I installed it on another machine - identical to the last one I did and got several error messages.  I believe I got past most of them...but the last one is annoying.

After I reboot, the server goes to a "Welcome" screen with a right facing arrow to click, when I click it, the next screen says " An error occured in Windows Home Server Setup" and then tells me to click BACK to try again or NEXT to close the setup wizard and run setup again.  There are only back and forward facing arrows.  If I click the back arrow...and try to go forward again, same issue.  If I click the forward arrow, a window pops up asking me to confirm I want to quit setup.

It then goes to the desktop but obviously something is wrong?

I can start the console and it reports "healthy".

    Do I need to reinstall?

    ------
Separate but possibly related question - when are you supposed to load the drivers for the NIC?  I seem to recall having to do that manually last time (several months ago) but don't recall how/when I did it...had to have been after WHS was installed and up and running though since it's an .exe setup file from DELL.

If I didn't do that right away but had the network cable plugged in, would that have created the above issue?

  • Ran CHKDSK on the 3 drive letters (C: D: I:).  C: & D: are the same physical drive (C: = 20GB SYS volume, the balance of this 250 GB drive is D:)  I: is my second internal physical drive = 640 GB.  D: is essentially empty while I: has only 2GB free.

It took a while but ALL completed with no issues found.

I was finding it hard to comprehend how a disk issue would only impact this particular stage of the install...but no issues, so now what?

UPDATE: No replies this morning so I did the following:
    - I turned off my 640GB drive in the BIOS and did a NEW/CLEAN install using only the 250GB drive - worked like a charm.  Seeing as the issues I was having were all related to C: & D: (2 volumes of the same 250 GB physical drive) and those issues didn't happen - seems like the issue was related to doing a RE-install?
    - I added in my other drive and no issues
    - The system is happily downloading and installing updates

As I noted above, I wasn't able to manually copy (and overwrite) the files that WHS was trying to copy either...but if I deleted them in the target folder, I could copy them then.  The files I deleted were NOT RO files.  All the issues I was encountering were related to the tail end of the install where the Connector and DotnetFX files are beng copied from C:\WHS and c:\redsitr over to D:\shares\software\home connector software (and it's sub's)

Any other ideas - what was causing this?  Once the trial is over and I have to (re)install the purchased SW - I don't want to end up in the same place.

    Thanks!
    sr

Separate but possibly related question - when are you supposed to load the drivers for the NIC?

If the NIC isn't recognized automatically, install the driver after the WHS install is complete.

I seem to recall having to do that manually last time (several months ago) but don't recall how/when I did it...had to have been after WHS was installed and up and running though since it's an .exe setup file from DELL.

I don't see how (if WHS can't find the driver for the NIC, the cable being plugged in is irrelevent).

  • Thanks, I'll try re-installing.

As far as the NIC, I think WHS must have been working before I installed the NIC drivers...as it looks like it went into some update mode prior to the installation being final?  Does that make sense?  I don't recall those steps when I did a clean install WITHOUT a network cable attached.  I think I'll try this reinstall without the network cable attached and let it update after it's fully installed.

Other DRIVER question:  Do you think I need to install the CHIPSET drivers and the VIDEO drivers also?  When I had to do a reinstall of XP Pro on this PC in it's previous life, DELL provided me with the updated drivers and the ORDER in which to install them (Chipset, Video, NIC).  At the time, sounded like the Chipset drivers were something that was needed for the PC to function.

    Much thanks.

That's how I install every OS (WHS or otherwise).  If WHS recognizes the NIC, it will still install the driver.  If not, install it manually afterwards.

    Chipset, probably.  Video, no.

When I had to do a reinstall of XP Pro on this PC in it's previous life, DELL provided me with the updated drivers and the ORDER in which to install them (Chipset, Video, NIC).  At the time, sounded like the Chipset drivers were something that was needed for the PC to function.

    I would.

I reinstalled - but got to the same initial error message I had yesterday.  During the "Finalizing Instalation" I get a beep and a popup window with the RED X and this message:

    Windows Home Server Setup Error
"Continuing to configure storage failed. The system cannot find the file specified. (error code 0x80070002)"

When I click OK another window tells me the install failed and would I like to review the instalation log.

Pasted below is the tail end of the log...I don't know exactly what it's trying to do??  The "qs.ini" error appears right from the start of the log, but at the start it's trying on drives: C,D,E,F,G.

As of right now I have the following drives visible in My Computer:

C: = SYS @ 20GB of my first hard drive
    I: = second hard drive @ 596GB
J: = balance of the first hard drive

    A: = floppy
I: = first CD drive (bootable one)
    X: = second CD drive

    What's going wrong?

UPDATE: Please see the latest BELOW the logfle info)

UPDATE: I installed the NIC driver (so I could copy and paste this data into here) and then I tried rebooting for the heck of it...but left the network cable attached.

The logfiles is now something like 100x longer due to all the updates that were downloaded and installed...but it failed again with a NEW error message.

It seems to have gotten past the other error somehow>

This is the new error message now:
Installing Windows Home Server Failed. Device Not Connected. (error code 0x8007048f)

Here's the tail end of the updated log file.  Note: I verified that C: and D: are there...and the folders specified are there...I tried to copy the file that errored out and I got the same error message...so I don't understand.  I tried copying and pasting it again...and it worked?

NOTE: the file was already there though the first time...it let me delete it, then I could paste the file here...but I don't think it was RO.

    I don't get it.

  • I rebooted again and this tiem got a Windows Operating System error it wants to send to MS.  The details say the "app" name is "demigrator.exe" version 6.0.1800.0

While I'm reading that, it was working in the background and now it's error 0x80070780 "file cannot be accessed".  In the log file belwo it says to correct the problem and reboot to restart the setup program.

What exactly is the problem I'm supposed to correct?

  • I rebooted again and this tiem got a Windows Operating System error it wants to send to MS.  The details say the "app" name is "demigrator.exe" version 6.0.1800.0

While I'm reading that, it was working in the background and now it's error 0x80070780 "file cannot be accessed".  In the log file belwo it says to correct the problem and reboot to restart the setup program.

What exactly is the problem I'm supposed to correct?

Latest additions to the log file...

Have you tried running chkdsk /r on each drive in your server (especially the primary drive)?

    Thanks!
    sr
