Cannot get beyond Welcome screen in XP Home

This is a friend's girlfriend's machine. Started as a job for removal of a spyware virus. Installed Norton SystemWorks 09 Trial Ed. Cleaned virus. Restarted machine. Now, I arrive at the Welcome screen (I never got the Welcome screen when I got the machine) and I click on only User available and it flashes the background phote and then logs off and returns to Welcome screen. I went into Recovery console to do a CHKDSK. No change. Safe Mode shows both the user's login and the Administrator's login. Clicking on Administrator also returns back to Welcome Screen. Trying to get Dell Recovery disks from friend's girlfriend. Trying all ideas before having to reinstall OS. I can try calling Dell Tech support to see if machine is eligible for tech support.
