Vista WGA Validation Issue; "...unable to determine whether this copy of Windows Vista is genuine" RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I think I am at the right place..."This forum is dedicated to Windows Genuine Advantage validation questions."

I am not totally sure of the sequence of events leading to my issue, however Vista reported that Aero would be shut down and that my software is "not genuine," something I am certain is not true; in other words, a false positive result.  The display from the "Validation Results" page is that "The validation service is unable to determine whether this copy of Windows Vista is genuine."  I have attached a copy of the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool output below...

I have admitttedly reinstalled Vista several times (approximately 3) since I have not been happy with the overall installation and wanted to start "fresh."  I have never had a problem with product activation, whether doing it by phone or internet.  This Genuine Advantage issue is a first for me.  Any suggestions on how to get beyond this?

  • No thank you!  The WGA issue has already been fixed!  Users that were affected simply need to visit: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click on "Validate Windows" to refresh the WGA file, then restart their computer.

    Carey,

You keep posting that Microsoft has a fix. Well the fix restored my Aero, but now I can no longer update Windows (due to the "Windows could not search for new updates" problem [error code: 800B0100]). Nothing posted here or out on the web has eliminated this problem - and it did not exist before the unvalidation issue arose on Friday. Had this nonsense not occurred with WGA I would not have the update problem I experience presently. So for some of us, its legacy lives on - the fix is a partial one only ...

    Pianiomangs;

This specific problem is not WGA related - as WGA validation is not required for simply searching for updates in Windows Updates.

I would suggest going to www.support.microsoft.com for your Windows Update related issue.

    THanks!

I got the same problem today when I was trying to install a Vista Update

  •

Same thing with me tonight while trying to update my direct X... I'm wondering if their servers are down.

  • Same thing is currently happening to me, and I only wanted to download an update to deal with a World in Conflict Demo issue...

I know my version is genuine. The update thingy has been working up till now, it only stopped checking for all available update when I tried to validate vista.

Also, I activated vista when i got it, so doesn't that mean that my version must be genuine?

    Saturday, August 25, 2007 4:01 AM
  • Same exact thing happened to me, all of us within the last day. It seems like it must be a recently released patch. What do you all have for computers? I know I just installed a Windows Update patch for my lenovo display, in addition to some Visual Studio updates (I had just installed VS 2005). What did you all just do?

  • What a joke. Getting it as well when I tried to download something from MS's website. I even re-entered my product key and reactivated it.

This is all for our own good, though. Right?

I guess because MS is having problems their validation tool, I'm forced to sit through nag screens and Aero theme disabled.

    Thanks.

  • This activation *** is a pain my ***.  I haven't changed anything on my laptop and I'm getting the same Aero has stopped responding thing and it won't run the validation.

The activation is also far more sensitive than XP. I changed my processor the other day on my desktop and it made me go through re-activating.  I was pissed.  If anything is going to make me go back to xp, it's all this ***.  And I'm an IT consultant and make software/OS recommendations to several hundred clients.  Vista is get a NO from me.

  • I am using Viata Business. I installed it in January with activation. I transferred it to another drive/motherboard about 30 days ago. Went through the Microsoft phone re-activation for this and everything was accepted. Was fine for up-dates until today! I was just wondering has anybody else done this recently.

Also I see the last Update cane in automatically today from Microsoft was update/patch # 7.0.6000.381. How about the erst of you?

  • Don't know if that is what caused it or not.
According to the patches that I have installed (img187.imageshack.us/my....ge=updateaf8.jpg), this one is not listed.

Not sure yet what is causing the issue - if it is something on the PC end or the server end.
It only seemed to happen when I went to a website and needed to do a validation check, then it marked something in Windows that this was an invalid copy of Windows, so it may be their servers stuffing up and causing our PCs to mark themselves as bad.

  • Ohh my gosh!! Me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I received a message from window saying I have been a victim of Liscense Counterfeiting and that I need to validate my copy. I went online and tried to validate but it said, Windows is unable to determine the Copy of this Window and asked I try again later. I felt so mad cause this is like the second time I received the message and the first time I validated and it was fine but then this happened to me again???!!!!! What the heck is wrong with MICROSOFT!!!! I wasted my money on buying this software and really, I wish I didnt purchase it in the first place.

more than likely it's the activation servers having troubles.

Well I am running Premium, been running it for a month no probs, went to update was asked for validation of genuine copy. Unable to determine please try again later, Bad thing is no games will work due to the pop up menu ( Aero not working... you may be a victim of MS incompetence).

I have rang tech support I have done the text chat I have searched for fixes patches, completed a restore to a few days ago and nothing. Does anyone know if you can disable Aero or at least the pop up to enable games to work until MS fix this?

  •

I have rolled back to the last windows update (restore) and that failed 24/08/2007) revert the OS to default GUI

The I tried teh last check point (23/07/2007) and that also failed with the same error..

    This is impossible.

I am currently backup my applications and will rebuild the OS as we MAY know that MS will take their time to fix this. I cannot wait for MS to figure this out and wait for them to fix their stuff up (again).

I still don't understand the need for this validation. Didn't we all "activate" Windows when we got the computer in the first place? There was something in that about ensuring your copy is genuine. I would appreciate it if someone could explain the difference to me .

I think its their servers gone mad...... this is freaking tarding..... man how can you afterall this *** put faith in their products.  I had XP for 4 years, then after a year on a new PC i installed ONECARE that screwed up everything, and i had to reinstall XP after that i had some many screw ups, had to reinstall it 6 times. Decided to try Vista, had lots of fun, untill this. man.....

  • Same problem here with my Vista Ultimate install. Nice pop-up window stating I'm not using genuine software and that Aero is disabled now. Everything was working fine up to a few hours ago. I guess this can either be some server issues at Microsoft, or they just completely lost it and decided to go mess things up ;-) Either way, it sucks, and they should make sure it's fixed pretty darn soon!

I have tried using the email technical support feature but it keeps saying there is a problem sending my problem report! Seriously beginning to believe all those people who advised me not to move onto vista. I know my copy & product key is genuine, pity Microsoft doesn't!

This is effecting all versions of windows XP and Vista.

Check out the XP forums and you'll see that they are having the same problems as well,

but for the XP version there is a download available that will validate you without having to use

the validation server as long as you don't try and use windows update for xp since that uses the

the validation server when you login to the internet update site.  So either way no updates until

    validation server is back online.

    Saturday, August 25, 2007 10:30 AM
  • I have exactly the same problem. I'm using Windows Vista Business.
    Saturday, August 25, 2007 10:46 AM
  • Well i thought i was going mad when the validation failed, the thing is, by the time microsoft fix this our systems may have already been shutdown, what about all the businesses that rely on Vista that have this very same issue and need their systems over the weekend.

    MICROSOFT, SORT THIS OUT, PRONTO.

It's funny because my laptop has Home Premium and is experiencing the issue.  I don't have the problem yet on my Vista Ultimate box yet.  But trust me when I say I'm not trying to connect to *** on MS servers.

  • I am using WVU and went through the diagnosis and pass everything - Still ... unable to determine etc... bla, bla, bla.

Obviously this is a major screw up from Microsoft validation server.  It appears that MS is loosing control !

    Saturday, August 25, 2007 12:44 PM
  • I have the same issue.  I was trying to download the August 2007 DirectX update and it unvalidated my version of Vista.  I have read many people have the same issue and believe that Microsoft is aware of it.  I have Windows Vista Home Premium.  I believe that MS needs to find another way to validate their software instead of causing loyal customers problems.

  •

Yup same applies to me, failed wga check

    Aero gone. Using Vista Business.

I ended up having to do a System Restore to an earlier date, DO NOT RESTORE TO 25/08/07, as I believe this is where all the evil has started from. Aero is restored though I still get the odd, warning telling me that Windows may not be genuine, just click cancel or elso you will go to the WGA site and you will end up with the same problem of losing Aero agin.

It has to be said my wee computer went a tad quicker after all the see through Aero loviness disappeared.

I am going to ave up and get a Mac.

    I spit on you Microsoft!

    Saturday, August 25, 2007 4:14 PM
  • Hi guys

Although I am a bit distressed by this entire validation process I am a bit relieved that many more people than I expected are having similar issues here. I installed an update for my Nvidia video card and for no apparent reason went to Microsoft's website and clicked Validate Windows. It comes up with an error stating "The validation service is unable to determine whether this copy of Windows Vista is genuine." I never had this problem before and although my version is activated, aero etc have been disabled.

Are Microsoft people doing anything about it? What difference did it make buying a legal copy if Microsoft can't differentiate between valid and counterfeit copies?

    Saturday, August 25, 2007 4:31 PM
  • I agree, this came as a great shock to me,  I know my copy is genuine, if it was'nt, then Dell provided me with a fake copy, which I would expect they would not. All I was doing was the normal updates, nothing downloaded in particular...

I am very annoyed that a Company the size of Microsoft, have no one available to, not only comment on this issue, and confirm the reason, what they are doing about it, or when will we all be "legal" again, and have full use of Vista, but that they cannot fix a major problem at weekends.... disgusting!

I like Vista, but it makes me want to revert back to MCE 2005Smile

I am now on my Windows XP machine, which is asking me to do updates, do I risk it, or will the same thing happen with XP?

  • This is ridiculous.  Not only does Microsoft need to get this issue resolved right now, not Tuesday, but we need to get the mainstream media involved.  Microsoft screwed up big with this one.

  • Well, in a warped way, I'm glad it's not just me. The validation error started for me last night (8/24) after trying to download a Windows Update. I'm running Vista Home Premium Upgrade, the real deal, bought at Fry's and not on some shady street corner.

I only skimmed the thread so I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but when I go through the visual inspection process of the DVD it fails there as well. The small circle holographs on either side of the disk with the windows flag image in the middle do not match what is shown on the Microsoft website. Mine say "Windows Genuine" and apparently they are supposed to say "Vista Genuine"

  • I would expect that this will be in the world press before long, without our helpWink I just can't belive this has happened.

Am I correct in saying that anyone that used Windows update today, 25th/08/2007, will have this problem? so it must check if you have a valid copy of Vista each time...

  • Wow, looks like we are all in the same CRAPPY boat.  I was trying to find a way to get my machine back in working order after last nights fiasco.  Incredible.  Once again the legitmate person gets screwed while the people who pirate software probably aren't even affected.  My old boss had the correct perspective on this.  We developed games for the PC and always had anit-piracy companies trying to sell us their wares.  He believed people who want to pirate software always will, so the legimate person shouldn't be penalized.  This whole validation process should be dropped.  This is just another nail in the Microsoft coffin.

  • I too suddenly received the same problem (Vista Home Premium (UK)), and breathed a sigh of relief when I came here and saw that I am not the only one.

The last thing I updated via Windows Update was today when I was alerted by Windows Update that I needed to update the Windows Updater!

This is with my desktop, haven't connected up with my Vista laptop yet.

I can't believe that some MS idiot has broken Vista for all!

    Okay!

It's 1940 UK Time (1840 GMT) on 25 Aug 07 and I have just tried once again to revalidate my Vista - and it worked!

Seems as if MS might have got it remedied.

Hey, I wonder; when the fault first came to light, I wonder if all the MS technicians got together and pulled straws to decide who told Mr Gates of the problem.

  • As the original poster of this thread, I would like to let you all know (that as previously indicated in this thread) the servers seem to be up and working again; I am now using genuine, non-pirated software, something I thoughtI had been doing all along..

Thank you all for your feedback!

  • I had exactly the same problem yesterday 25th August. Cannot believe what microsoft are doing! Last month they trashed my XP Pro system. I was using a Full Retail version that cost me £259.99 that has worked since 4th July 2004. After letters and phone calls to microsoft they accepted that my software is genuine and gave me a new product key. Now they have trashed my Vista Ultimate system, I actually purchased the software from microsoft via their anytime upgrade site, and got a digital download key!

The really scarey thing is that when aero shut down,I got a copy of my company accounts saved to a flash drive.

Then the Lexmark connector went down, followed by Intuit Quick books. No problem do a system restore! No chance.

Well thankfully with Vista Ultimate, every week I do complete backup of my computer to a usb hard drive.IT DIDN'T work!!

Now getting frightened, my whole business, my livelyhood and my employees are saved on the computer. And there is no one to talk to at WGA on a Saturday or Sunday.

Tried to restore my company file to Quickbooks on my XP Pro computer, it was corrupted!! Obviously microsoft write something to the system when they decide to put you out of business!

If it had not been for my faithfull Linux based SANs running dataplow drives, my company would now be in serious trouble.

I have now re installed Vista Ultimate, it activated without any problem. So what was or is the problem. I can now spend the rest of the bank holiday re installing network printers, account packages, setting up remote incoming clients etc. Thank you microsoft.

Next month you will probably want to trash my system saying that my fully paid for Office 2007 is not genuine?? So what is the Genuine Advantage?

  • Not be be anti-Microsoft (as I understand the need to keep your Vista alive and well), but perhaps anyone experiencing a problem and needing their PC ASAP fully functioning could try one of the live Linux CDs temporarily?  Got basic web browsing, document editing, etc.  No authentication necessary.  If you can burn a CD, you can be back up and running (albeit a bit slowly) until this gets fixed.

  • No thank you!  The WGA issue has already been fixed!  Users that were affected simply need to visit: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click on "Validate Windows" to refresh the WGA file, then restart their computer.

  • Carey,

You keep posting that Microsoft has a fix. Well the fix restored my Aero, but now I can no longer update Windows (due to the "Windows could not search for new updates" problem [error code: 800B0100]). Nothing posted here or out on the web has eliminated this problem - and it did not exist before the unvalidation issue arose on Friday. Had this nonsense not occurred with WGA I would not have the update problem I experience presently. So for some of us, its legacy lives on - the fix is a partial one only ...

    Pianiomangs;

This specific problem is not WGA related - as WGA validation is not required for simply searching for updates in Windows Updates.

I would suggest going to www.support.microsoft.com for your Windows Update related issue.

    THanks!
