Windows update corrupted and Windows 7 not genuine 7600 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Purchased Thinkpad w510 last January 2011 direct from Lenovo.  I did a partial system restore a few days ago after getting a virus.  Virus is gone but now Windows Update doesn't work and occasionally get a Windows Not Genuine message on my screen.  Tried to copy Advantage Diagnostic Tool readout but get this message:

"Failed to create output files, hr = 0x80070002. Please contact support."

Had to type this all out so hope it's correct.

When I went to www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate I got this:

Files that Windows needs to work properly have been modified, removed, or
disabled. To resolve, you need to install genuine Windows. Not to worry, we can
    help you with that.

Then they want me to buy Windows 7 Professional. Went to www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag and everything passed. Here's the new MGADiag report:

I would suggest running CHKDSK and SFC (assuming that you’ve already tried a System Restore?)
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK C: /R
    and hit the Enter key
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

run another MGADiag report, and post the results.

I did as you instructed in last post. here's what it said when I ran SFC/SCANNOW:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

I have the Log it created if you need to see it.  Here is the new MGADiag report:

That looks to have fixed the major problem :)
Now all you need to do is change the Product Key to the one on your COA sticker, using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.
You may need to activate by phone.

  • When using the Diagnostic Tool, please ignore any error.  That error occurs when the Diagnostic Tool is unable to create a log file but since we don't use the log file anyways, it doesn't matter.  Just click the Copy button and then paste the report into a new post in this thread.

    Thank you,

I just noticed you’re using an older version of MGADiag – please download the newer one from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 and use that on in future.
    (delete the old one!)

What’s the EXACT error message when you try to run slui.exe ?

  • When I run slui.exe it says:

    "An error has occurred.

    Code 0x080070241

    Description

Windows cannot veify the digital signature for this file. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source."

For what it's worth I've run Malewarebytes, Avast and other antivirus software in safe mode and after initially catching a few things they've since come up clean.

Odd – I’d have expected  MGADiag  (even the older version) to pick up on that  - which probably means that there is something else blocking the process.
What happens if you go to Validation?
If it fails, go to the Diagnostics site
see what it has to say, and act on any recommendations, then post a new MGADiag report (with the new MGADiag, please!)

  • When I went to www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate I got this:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

I have the Log it created if you need to see it.  Here is the new MGADiag report:

I did as you instructed in last post. here's what it said when I ran SFC/SCANNOW:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

I have the Log it created if you need to see it.  Here is the new MGADiag report:

That looks to have fixed the major problem :)
Now all you need to do is change the Product Key to the one on your COA sticker, using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.
You may need to activate by phone.

  • Windows Activation worked! Thanks to all for helping with this issue. Still having trouble with Windows Update. It wants to install 31 updates including Service Pack 1 but installation is not successful. Tried stopping my antivirus and running the System Update Readiness Tool but that fails too.

Oh gawd – another one :(
If CheckSUR is failing, it tends to indicate some fairly major problems – I’m working with someone else who had a similar problem, so that thread may be of use..... (if I can find it!).... ah – got it!
It’s Vista – but so far, everything we’ve done also applies to Win 7
You should make a post of your own in the Answers Windows Updates forum – specialists can assist there.
    HTH – and Good Luck!
